Risks of overclocking the CPU

Thread Starter
Well it seems like everyone is overclocking everything but I thought it was unsafe. I was going to do a build for a school project and over overclock the cpu and mobo, and whatever else you can possibly overclock. My question is, is it safe to overclock and will it reduce the life of my computer because im gonna need this pc for a while.

Overclocking is safe if you keep the voltages and temperatures within the "safe limits" for the CPU. These limits are usually specified by the manufacturer and vary between different CPU's.

It also depends on what components you have. It is not safe to overclock on some motherboards because they lack the proper cooling or power phases for it, and it is not safe to overclock with a cheap quality PSU either.

All-in-all overclocking is safe if you do it properly and with the proper components, and while it will decrease the life of your components, it shouldn't do so by a noticeable amount.

Overclocking doesn't persay reduce the life of your PC.

Increased voltage and temps do however which is a by product of overclocking.

HOWEVER...

With an after market CPU cooler you can overclock your CPU without a heat increase and depending on how far you overclock your processor or GPU or anything for that matter doesn't mean you have to increase your voltage.

Like me for example I am running at stock voltage but I am able to overclock my CPU to 3.6 Ghz from 3.2 Ghz with a voltage or heat increase because of the way I have it set up.

Even if it did reduce the life, by the time it would kill it you would probably be either planning or have another build
