Worth moving from a 8800GT SLI to a GTX 260?

Thread Starter
I can get a GTX 260 for $80. Is it worth it given my current setup?

yes and no... i would say performance is pretty equal but power and heat should be less with one card.

Nope, unless you primarily play older games or games that do not support SLi.

I wouldn't say so. Your performance would probably be similar, but at least you would have less heat, noise and probably less power consumption.

Basically what microman said.

The two 8800GTs are more powerful than a single 260 (unless it's a 216 core version). Anything below the 400 series would be a marginal upgrade at best.

I wonder if we'll ever see another set of cards with the lifespan of the 8 series.

I (and others) thought that the GTX 460 might be similar in that way to the 8800GT, but already I'm thinking it probably won't be. But yeah, I'm sure at some point we'll see another series like that.

Any benchmarks ? How does 8800GT sli scale with a 9800 GX2 ?

Haha who knows. Unless Crysis 2 really pushes the current gen hardware (and atm it's looking like it won't) I don't see any other big-name titles this year that look like they'll be hugely demanding. The Fermi line just might stick around well past Kepler.

A 9800Gx2 is just 2 9800GTs combined into a single card. And of course, 9800GTs are just rebranded 8800GTs... so... 8800GT sli = 9800Gx2 as far as performance is concerned.

Yeah, I guess so.

And the 9800GX2 is actually two underclocked 8800GTS 512MB GPUs, so it's a little bit worse than SLI 8800GTs.
