Athlon II X4 640?

I'm looking for a sub-$200 CPU for strictly gaming and I saw the Athlon II X4 640 for $98 bucks. Will I notice a difference in performance in games between the Athlon and a Phenom II Black Edition 955?

Yeah there'll be a performance difference, but nothing that would mean life or death. You'd be better off with the 955 though.

Is this to replace your current system, downgrade, or a brand new one?

I doubt it if you're not overclocking. The BE will give you an unlocked multiplier, but that's about it. The 640 also lacks L3 cache, but from my own experiences with one it doesn't make that much of a difference unless you're running benchmarks. Even then the performance decrease is VERY marginal.

The system in my sig has been sold due to financial issues and now I have some money to get a few parts. My girlfriend got me a Coolermaster HAF X case for Christmas, but now I need parts to fill it

For gaming? You won't see a difference. My 630 reached 3.5Ghz without any problems and is stable.

For gaming, close to 0% difference. Look for any and all benchmarks and you'll find that the extra money is not worth it.

Any game in particular? I can help you find the benchmarks.

Yup strictly gaming!

Thanks guys, I'm on a budget and I won't be doing anything CPU intensive other than games so Athlon X4 it is!

How is this mobo?

Looks like a nice board. Has the 880G chipset too, which is up there. You'll definitely get along fine with the Athlon, because it never struggled with anything I could throw had it. I always ran mine with a small overclock to 3.2 GHz as well

I have that proc in an M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 and it's clocked up to 3.8@1.5v and does 4@1.55v takes whatever I throw at it.
