Athlon II X4 640? - Page 2

my athlon II 630, overclocked to 3.5ghz has played NUMEROUS games with zero problems. i'll try to name some:

bioshock
arkham asylum
elder scrolls IV
borderlands
blur
resident evil 5
starcraft 2
warcraft 3
deathspank
half life 2
spore
king arthur (role playing)
prince of persia (2008)
prince of persia forgotten sands
unreal tournament 2003
unreal tournament 3

+ a lot more Steam games like Toki Tori, Eufloria etc

The 630 was paired with a 9800 GTX+ and later with a XFX 4850. the 630 with those gpus handle the games just as well as my phenom II 555 with GTX 460 (768).

Uhmmm
Guys, you're all doing it wrong
Gaming is where the L3 cache on Phenom II vs. Athlon II has the most difference. Sometimes it's not big, but sometimes it can be.
That said, it's still a good gaming CPU. You lose some FPS but it's still a very good deal.

The new Phenom II X4 840 has no L3 cache.. A "X4 650" with a phenom name @ 102 USD

I suggest getting this CPU instead of X4 640, which only costs you additional $2.

You have the possibility of unlocking the l3 cache on the athlons though :/

Though I wouldnt buy the chip expecting it to unlock, just consider it a nice bonus when it does.

you got it wrong too..
this topic is about x4 640 vs x4 955..

From the test I've read, in gaming you will only see difference if you run in extra low resolution and low graphic, at high resolution (1680x1050) and not-low-graphic you could see 1 or 2 FPS difference.

But people opinions on this subject change a lot.

You can't anymore. That was when they were just launched and, even at the time, only a few were actually based on the Deneb die. Now they're only based on the native Propus die, which has no L3 cache to be unlocked. From what I've seen, the Propus die also OCs a bit less (3.8GHz max or so, compared to 4-4.2GHz for the Deneb die).

Ah ok, then maybe (if he was concerned about it) look into the marketplace to grab one of the older chips.

And Correct, most I saw on reviews were about that much (3.8 range) though 200Mhz shouldnt be much of a deal breaker

I'm pretty sure that CPU is a Phenom II because it is supposed to be black edition... however recent reviews seem to have said otherwise

I think we can all agree that, if your on a budget but still want great performance, the Athlon II's are great chips, if you have the extra 50 bucks then go for the 955.

However in my opinion I dont think the price difference would justify anything over the Athlon except if your looking to try and do some future proofing

Off topic, but I remember when I got the 965c2 for 250 lol my oh my how the market progresses

I actually have the same dilemma, I want to change my current config (look at the sign) for:
x4 640 - 870a-ud3
x4 955 - 870a-ud3
For 30$ CAD in difference.
