I'll be revealing how the monitor is mounted along in the next day or so, I have to finalize a few measurements before I consider it ready for fabrication.

To keep everyone happy here's a progress report on the "tower" itself.

So it's time to plug in the PSU, DVD drive and the HDD into the base of the system:

Just have to undo a few screws to pop the drives inside:

So here's the drive chassis ready to go:

And with DVD drive installed:

And now installed in the tower base:

Now it's time to get those fugly cables under control:

Before:

After a little sleeving love:

Looking much better:

Now it's time to ditch the stock CPU cooler and figure out how to get the H50 on there:

What better time to try to learn to use Google Sketchup, here's where I envision things ending up:

Profiles of system:

Front view:

Side view:

And finally the back:

Thanks man, all of the 3D illustrations were done in the free version of Google Sketchup, and I'm just using an old Canon Rebel for the photos.

And here's how the monitor is going to be mounted; both the monitor and the case itself will be attached to a solid frame that I plan to make from 3/4" plywood. The monitor will have a quick release mount for easy transport, luckily Newegg/Rosewill just happened to make something that was perfect for this purpose:

The Rosewill monitor mount is represented by the white cylinder behind the monitor in the following images I made up showing the approximate dimensions of the machine and its frame:

Side view with monitor extended:

Rear view showing the planned acrylic "hood" that will enclose the componentry:

And a channel under the unit will provide the PSU with plenty of unobstructed airflow:

Now it's time to finalize a few design changes and get to wood working in the coming days. Thanks for looking

mmm nice.
thought about having the case around the other way? so dvd drive goes under the screen.

and possiably rotating the motherboard around so it still facing the screen (:

I did take a look at doing that but I found the simplest solution was to orientate the components like illustrated above. All of the cables and input receivers will be enclosed in a second hood like section of the case below the monitor that will keep everything contained and hidden.

Wood working has yet to start but I have been making the heatsinks for the motherboard, pics tomorrow.

Is that PET sleeving?

Nice work so far. I'm liking these SFF builds, and the all-in-one idea sounds cool, and I would even like to get my hands on a Sandy Bridge ITX build in the future. BTW, how exactly are you mounting that H50?

Yes that is el-cheapo PET sleeving, good enough for me to learn on and use in little projects like this one before stepping up to MDPCX quality material.

As for the H50 mount, I'm working on an acrylic/aluminum bracket that bolts right into the case to hold the rad and fans.

Looks like a lot of people have run into some mounting issues with the Corsair H50 and the Gigabyte H55N-USB3 motherboard as attaching the stock Intel backplate will actually damage the board. I came up with a super easy solution using a spare AMD H50 backplate, I just filed down the T-Nut retainer till it matched the height of the Intel model and used just the corners of the AMD backplate to anchor the cooler.

The only downside to doing this (aside from murdering an AMD backplate) is that I need to attach the cooler before the motherboard gets bolted into the case. No big deal.

Now came time to give the VRM components of the board some cooling, here's what I started with in terms of parts:

And here's the puny stock H55 heatsink and some bare VRM components around the CPU socket:

When I said I was going to make something a little more significant than just Enzotech MOS-C1s on the MOSFETS here's what I meant: 45mm tall tower coolers made from an old P4 sink, beside a MOS-C1 for size comparison.

And here we have the upgraded cooling applied to the board, including a much more effective H55 cooler.

The acrylic rad mount is my next step
