I've had another idea I'd like to throw up to perhaps solve an issue on "pre-claiming" items that has been going on a lot, as well as to entice The Swap Meet as a way to serve needs rather than "un-needs".

I do have an idea for the Swap Meet I would like to discuss with you. We currently use the Swap Meet as a stage to exchange parts we don't need, but what if someone actually needs those parts? I was thinking we could mirror the site's "wanted" section Swap Meet style: by organizing a "wanted" list. If you need something and someone on Swap Meet happens to have one or put it up, you get priority. However, you must already have credits (for other items you put up) first to be able to do this. The item you want will be valued in credits (under the new credit system) that will be deducted from your credit count when (and if) the item comes up that you want. You will have to confirm in the thread that you will accept the other person's item, but it does serve as a method of guaranteeing (if you give back). This may solve the problem of pre-claiming and perhaps more effectively serve users' needs. Because by rules this is a place where you give at no cost except shipping, it still differentiates from the site's wanted section. You will have the ability to remove an item from this wanted list (i.e. if you got it from somewhere else) as long as you post in the thread.

Yeah, everyone could just add what they need to a want list, and givers, before they post the item, could look through the want list and pm someone who needs it. Then, as they post it, they could put a shout out to the person on the want list, establishing priority, something of the sort? This is interesting, been on half a day, got 2 items gone...

Postings could actually have a 3 day delay before being able to claim, that way members have time to look through and find, not have to be lucky and be first to see it. The claiming after 3 days could be based on arguments for who needs it...

I've got another idea to prevent pre-claiming (and this is perhaps based on one of my mistakes from earlier)

If you say you are "maybe" putting it up, it's up - even if you cannot provide it now [but can do so later]. The single mention of even maybe puts it up and available for grabs. This way, no one pre claims a "maybe" item, and no one gets worked up about it later on when the item is "actually" put up. This will also entices our "Swappers" (nice name?) to be more sure about what they put up, a.k.a. watch your mouth. Of course, you can take your items off of The Swap Meet in case there is a mistake. It may be a disappointment to users if you take it off, but it's better you take it off before anything actually happens (i.e. someone pays the shipping) than after.

This is an interesting idea for ensuring "need" priority. However, if no one actually needs it but there is a want to have it? i.e. reflex99 claimed a Celeron D to put it under DICE. I'd rather he claim it and get it over with even if he kills the chip, rather than we wait days or weeks for someone who actually needs it (who - who knows - may never even come) and it just sits there in the spreadsheet.

Of course you must have already put things up and gotten credits for it, before you post for anything you "want". Perhaps to prevent negative credits value, the only items you can "priority claim" (perhaps that is what we could name it) cannot, total, exceed the max amount of credits you have at the moment.

i could see it going bad fast If we do that i think it should be something you ACTUALLY need also i think it should be limited to one item. Otherwise we just have another wanted section where anything worth while disappears before its even posted. I mean what if i save my points for a good card or motherboard that comes up but someone putting together a 3rd rig gets first dibs cuz they "need" it. I just think people should be nice like badat has been after a ram fan forever we all know it so we let him have it

why can people just be civil and nice i dont think anyone on here has realy "needed" anything posted if it has happened its been only a few times

Thats why a 3 day delay would be perfect, an item would only be in the spreadsheet for 3 days, depending on what it is. Theres many items still sitting in there no one has claimed. Some ppl just happen to post things that people jump on. Being a part of the Swap Meet, you need to be paying attention, LOL If you're giving things away for free for the purpose of getting other things for free, plus shipping obviously, then you need to pay attention, and already have an idea of what you want before going and giving things away. I've only posted things don't need or want. Yes, our items all costed us something at one point to just give away, and it sucks someone might claim something they don't physically NEED, but want, when someone else NEEDED it, but unless we are mutual friends in real life, how can we know? I just want to get rid of some small, essentially valueless things in exchange for other, seemingly valueless things I could use. PCMCIA wifi card, need that... Small SATA HDD would be fine. These are like $15 and $20 items. IF you were to just try and sell, after fees from eBay or Paypal, you wouldn't make anything anyway. Better off giving away for chance at replacing it for "free" with something you could actually use.

Only problem is if someone puts up a couple 1 credit items that are valueless, like 5 DVD-writers pulled from garbage bin PCs, then uses those 2.5 credits over 3 months to get some decent items that just happened to post, and then goes and sells them. Thats shady. The Swap Meet is gonna require people with morals, a self governing community you could say. I just ran across it, ad like the idea of giving away small useless things in exchange for other possibly useful valueless things. We don't need people giving away $150 sound cards for 1 -3 credits, and nice PhenomII mobos and CPUs, those are worth money, not just trading to whoever wants it, unless its valueless to you, and ok to just give away. Hopefully a trade for something worth something goes towards something else you need thats actually worth it. Worse thing I can see happening is I spent $25 on a used rad, can't sell it, but willing to put it int he Swap Meet, have someone snatch it, which is ok, and have me spend that one credit, that essentially cost me $25, go towards a $10 item. A DVD-rom for a 40gb IDE HDD, fair trade, but a Phenom II for a 2x512MB kit of DDR1, or a AM3 mobo for wifi router, etc? No way son.

Am I contributing?

i am new to all this and am kinda confused, now i just put up some items to the swap meet, i have quite a few points, now, can i just go and request what i wanted and pm the person, or how does that part work, do i need to trade that person or buy the part off of him/her? or do we turn our parts in for the points and then just sit and wait for someone to claim them?

and also what happens if someone puts stuff up for points and then gets what they wanted with said points and then pulls that stuff back down or refuses to ship the parts?

That's simply how you do it. Be sure to post on the thread around the same time or before you PM the person though, don't PM after everything i.e. shipping costs is done as it may cause complications if other members may wish for some things. As long as you have enough credits for a particular item, you're okay. Credits are deducted for every pat you claim.

We have rep-governing rules stating for new members they must wait until their items ship before having spendable credits. I think you do serve an interesting point and that it is definitely something we need to work out.

I really like the idea of the Swap Meet, but still feel it needs work.

Firstly I think the front page really needs some improvement. Things like how many REP+ / Trader points you need to do what should be highlighted and bold to emphasize importance. Right now I see a long body of text in no apparent order which only adds to the confusion, which however explanatory makes people reluctant to post. In fact, I see a lot of the posts are asking how does this work? How are things valued? Who do I appeal to for valuation? What proof do I need to provide? The thread is 120 pages all of this should be front, center, and in concise sentences organized on the first.

Second, I see a lot of stuff is not making it to the front page. This should be required so we know the table is up to date, it does not simply become a free-for-all to whoever has the most time, and to establish this as a reliable repository for exchange. To that effect things on offer should be required to be posted on the table first. With time offered and location also required. A one day waiting / screening period might help to this effect. Alternatively the thread could be split into a claim table main-thread and an offer / valuation sub-thread and name it as such.

Third, I feel the credits system needs to be revamped. Since we are already assigning half and quarter credits why not just go for a full ten point system with no partial points? Or partial points only given to sub 1 credit items. This way something like a dialup modem - not really worth anything and will 99% likely never be claimed - will not be posted and something like a Phenom cannot be claimed by a combination of a DVD-ROM, SDRAM, and a IDE Cable.

Finally, as for people who take but renege on giving, they should be suspended from taking and required to even out their credit ratio before taking again and/or permanently banned for more than two incidents of abuse. Retraction should be allowed, but only if you have a positive ratio.

I hope this has been helpful.
