Is my Cpu or Gpu crashing?

Thread Starter
I've been playing mass effect 2 for the last few hours, and every 2 hours or so its been crashing and I've had to do a manual shutdown twice. Thing is, I don't know if my cpu or gpu is the problem. I got my gpu overclocked to a point where I've tested its stability, and I know its stable at this setting, idk about my cpu though. Whenever it crashes all it does is freeze. I get no artifacts or anything, but sometimes the signal to the monitor cuts off. The reason its hard for me to decide is because the clock on my gpu I'm 80% sure is stable. But I've been gaming in other games with the same strain on my cpu with no crashes. any help would be great..

simple put gpu at stock and game and see if it crashes if it does its probly the cpu not being 100% stable.

He's correct, if you have overclocked your GPU or CPU it can be either or, so try going stock on your GPU first and see if it still happens, if it does, then it's the CPU and vice versa.

Do some stress testing:

Use OCCT to stress either CPU or GPU: http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download

Or Prime 95 to test cpu: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

Have you verified that your PSU isn't the issue? Playing games draws a lot of power, especially since the GPU is working harder. It could be that your PSU is going, I've had that issue in the past. Granted it's the corsair 1200W, you could try testing it.

It's all about process of elimination, just test individual components. Or put your CPU at stock and leave your GPU overclocked and see if it fails. And then vice versa.

Hope that helps!
