6970 and Fraps

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about upgrading from a 4890. I do a lot of Frapsing at 1920x1080 and I need the fps boost. Do you think the performance will be worth the $? And do you think only 1024MB on the card will have its drawbacks?

Edit: Sorry I meant the 6870, big difference I'm sorry

You can buy the 6950 (the 2GB version and ONLY the 2GB version) and have it fully unlocked to a 6970. The 6950 only costs around $270 on Newegg, compared to the $370 pricetag of the 6970. Going this route, it will DEFINITELY be worth it.

See my edit, I made a mistake on the tittle.

This was the card I was looking at.

2nd edit: I didn't realize that the 6950's were so cheap on newegg. Is the 50$ difference worth the cost?

It should give you at least 10 more FPS on most games. I'd get the 6950 and unlock it. Look here for benchmarks -

My recommendation is not to put the 6970 bios. But mod the 6950 bios to unlock the shaders and then just overclock to what you feel is good. There has been a few horror stories with 6970 bios putting the 6950 out of commission. But maximum risk maximum gain - your call.

I unlocked my shaders and did a slight overclock. Deciding on a good cooling solution before going any further.

EDIT: Are you thinking of upgrading to 6870 instead of 6970? If so, it is a great card. I do not have any experience with the 4890 to compare against. I am guessing the 6870 will be a better buy because:
1. It is a DX11 card and so you will be able to take advantage of all DX11 features.
2. It can be had for less than $200
3. Stock vs stock, it is not a whole lot behind the 6950.
4. It has awesome xfire scalability if you want to get another one for cheap.
5. And taking a calculated guess, it should net you much more performance than the 4890 (hoping folks with experience will chime in).
6. I am assuming driver support for the 6870 will be better - I am convinced all the 'AMD drivers are crap' are pure BS. Had used a 6870 and now 6950. No issues whatsoever.

Right now my choices are the 6870 or the 6950. I was just wondering if the 6950 was worth the extra 50$.

To me, the 6950 worth the extra money as I was able to unlock the shaders and overclock it with voltage control. Stock vs stock, I saw about 10 fps increase in heaven 1.0 benchmark. With unlocked shaders and mild overclock (840 core, 1280 mem), I saw an increase of 15 - 17 fps increase over the 6870. Once I am able to overclock further, that performance will increase. The only time 6950 is NOT worth over a 6870 is if you already have a 6870. Otherwise, it is definitely worth the extra 50 bucks.

As far as frapsing, I think he is talking about monitoring FPS with FRAPS?? EDIT: I may have pulled that out of my rear end. So ignore it if I am totally off ! lol

No, I fraps a lot of gameplay. Montages? I'm no console kiddie

Looks like I am going for the 6870, I just need something that I can stick in and install the drivers. I'm not too interested in overclocking or messing with the card's bios.
