Upgrade

Thread Starter
This thread originally started in the video cards section but has moved here after I was told it didnt make much sense to upgrade video in such an aging system.(The one in the sig below) So I have been trying to come up with a small build. My budget is $500 for monitor, video, cpu, motherboard and memory. I now figure i will have to probably use onboard video due to the budget. I was shooting for a 22 inch monitor. Working on finding memory compatible atm.

Any thoughts on this would be gladly appreciated

AMD Athlon II x4 640 + ASUS M4A79XTD EVO - $174, $159 AR
Palit GT 240 - $65, $35 AR
Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 - $50, $35 AR
AOC 22" 1080p LCD - $120 + $9 shipping
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - $100, $90 AR [combo deal loophole]

Total cost: $518 shipped, $448 AR
With OCZ Special Ops 1600 CL8 memory ($40, $30 AR) total cost: $508, $443 AR
Close enough or does it have to be slightly lower?

Also, you might want to consider cutting down the monitor a couple inches to try and make room for that video card... Looking at Newegg there is one 20" that's only $110 until 2/9.
But it all comes down to how you want to use your PC.
If it's for gaming then you would definitely want to get a cheaper monitor to make room for that GPU... If it's for general use; ie. web-browsing, watching movies, listening to music, etc. then I can see the bigger monitor.

But if it is for gaming and you got that 20" I was suggesting (I know it's a temporary deal, but just thinking hypothetically here) and you got this I think that would be a better choice.
Also, I can give my personal recommendation for a Sapphire 5770, mine was the cheapest version at the time, but I've heard awesome things about Vapor-X models as far as overclocking goes.

You think 20 would be just as good for gaming? Only reason I ask is I am playing on a 15inch now. Will my current power supply be sufficent?

well if you are playing on a 15" now, any upgrade will give you a better gaming experience. i gamed for a long time on a 19" (1440x900) and it did the job quite fine. i didnt expect i would get a better gaming experience from a bigger monitor but once you get one you think otherwise to save costs i think a 20" is really going to last you a long time if you can get it for $110. my suggestion would be:

- AMD Athlon II x4 640 + ASUS M4A79XTD EVO - $174, $159 AR (the one xd_1771 posted)
- 20" monitor that btgrant is talking about (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009263)
- Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - $100, $90 AR [combo deal loophole] ( the one xd_1771 was talking about )
- Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 - $50, $35 AR( the one xd_1771 was talking about)
all that equals down to about $400 without a gfx. for about $100 AR you can probably get a 5770. that should make it a nice solid build that is for sure going to give an huge boost!

edit: a 5770 for $100 after rebate. the offer ends today though
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-338-_-Product

edit 2: i forgot to answer your question regarding the PSU. 600 watt is enough to power that system, or a new one as long as you dont go SLI. the only thing i am concerned about is that OCZ PSU's arent really that reliable. i think this isnt going to be a problem though scince your system isnt going to draw close to 600 watts.

I use my 20" for gaming since eyefinity is a bit annoying... I thought it was an awesome upgrade when I switched from a single 17" so I think you'll probably be quite pleased upgrading from a 15". Sorry for not posting the link to that by the way.
For sub-$100 graphics you could go with the 5670 which is one of the best sub-$100 cards according to this chart from Tom's Hardware. The reviews for that look pretty descent, it looks like it can play newer games pretty well without AF and AA. I personally would choose this one or this one, but if you're looking for a low profile design, this XFX looks pretty nice as well (it will just have higher temps).
I like that MSI... For the Cyclones they have some really nice overclocking software and I've heard those cards stay nice and cool.
