Macs have their place. If someone were wanting to compare building their own PC vs. buying a Mac Pro, I would do everything in my power to disuade them from such a situation. The only people who would stress a Mac Pro are serious, professional video/photo/music guys and engineers. On that note, why get one still? Because OS X fails much less than Windows. It's simple as that. I fix computers for a large corporation for a living. If more of our computers were Mac, I'd be out of a job. I rarely see the OS X users because their stuff simply keeps working.
Now, when we come to laptops, the tables turn. Unless you want to do some hardcore mobile gaming, I'd say get a mac laptop instead of a windows one. Why? Build quality is leaps and bounds better. Windows-powered laptops are slowly catching up on this front, but I'll still take a unibody Macbook Pro any day. Battery life: my 13.3" Macbook Pro hits a solid 7-8.5 hours every charge, every day. I tested battery life with Windows installed via boot camp because I read Windows' power management wasn't as efficient. Sure enough, Windows on Mac hardware struggles -- on my 13.3 MBP I only got 3-4 hours. I saw 4.5 hours once...once.
And then there is the topic of OS X vs. Windows. I personally prefer OS X to Windows. I like the look, layout, and performance of it better. To each his own.
Truth be told, there are many different types of users and many different needs. Being that I have to deal with Windows' shortcomings and some rather shoddy hardware quite frequently, I would take a mac over a windows box in many circumstances.
