Game Server Advice

Experienced building laptops but have not built a rack server(s) yet. So need some advice.

Requirements.

Host several clan games on one or multiple servers (don't know whats best).
1 instance of each game.

1. IL2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover. 128 Players
2. Battlefield 3 (Don't know if they will open up the server client like BF2 was or do the preferred partner bunk- 64 players)
3. Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad
4. 200 User Teamspeak 3 Server

My bandwidth is fiber 50 MBPS down and 15 Up but I can go to 100/100 if I need to.

Any recommendations on what server or servers I should build?

Any advice is highly appreciated. My budget is around 1000 dollars give or take.

Well then, shall we get started? This requires a lot more than a thousand dollars if you are using racks, use a normal PC instead.

TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE (no flaming from experienced members)

Two of these should work...

There you go

Thank you very much for the advice! Those boxes are so not very pretty though.... I think it is worth doubling or tripling my budget just for aesthetics alone. Will 2000 or 3000 dollars put me in rack range (I already have the rack, firewall/switch).

Just letting you know, that dedicated server box won't help with BF3, you will need to purchase a dedicated server or rent one from a Dice partner, unless you plan on running unranked. Also I am not sure about Teamspeak licenses, but I think they have a cap.

No offense but the server market isn't tailored to "cases that look nice". It's geared towards hardware performance and uptime.

If you're looking for a rack server look at this: HP ProLiant DL120 G6

If you look for rack systems you will be paying a premium dependent upon U size.

1U will run you more. You could get a 4U case and essentially run any ATX motherboard and standard processor.

Aha, so they are going the same way as BFBC2 rather than BF2? Thanks!

if your set on going rack mounted i would search crageslist and see about finding a rack off of there for cheep. as for the computer it self im thinking a 4u case with a i7 860/870 with 8+gigs of ram would be good. you could run a couple of virtual machines off of it to run each server. my guess is if you shop around you could get it done for close to $1200. also dont forget a UPS for the server so add $100-200 for that.

you can use a xeon if ya got the money. from what i understand is they are just higher binned chips with more memory bandwith. to me its not needed to run a game server.

i also agree with the above with just get a tower and use that. there is no need for rack mounting in less you have enough stuff to put in it. i have been looking at a lian li pc-a04a (LINK - i know your in Sweden but for link purposes) if you end up getting a matx motherboard. its smaller then a good amount of cases but still has 7 spots for a hard drives, so there is some room for upgrades. plus imo its sexy

Good looking case! Don't think I can get em over here. Probably just go with a HAFX.

Would it make any sense going with a dual 1366 Socket motherboard. I could start out with a couple of 950's and later down the road upgrade to double hexcores. Would that be good for a game server running two to three virtual machines, i.e.,

IL2 COD
Red Orchestra Heroes of Stalingrad
Teamspeak 3
