Overclocking Q8300 to 2.8ghz

Thread Starter
Edit: title says 2.8ghz I cant 3ghz to work I will settle for 2.8ghz

Hi I am trying to overclock my Q8300 to 3.0ghz from 2.50ghz stock on a Asus P5N-D. I know this board is not good for C2Q overclocking. But I thought I could get to 3.0ghz and keep it stable but I can even make it into windows with the settings below. So if anyone could advise me on what voltage settings I should use that would be great.

fsb: 400- If I set this to 408 I can run prim95 for 20min no errors but at 400 I cant boot into windows.

vcore: 1.325
DRAM: Auto
HT: 1.30 or 1.36
NB: 1.30 or 1.36
SB: Auto

Q8300 and P5N-D... I've learned it's quite the combo. I also see that this is your first post, welcome!

But let me tell you about the Q8300, I'm tweaking mine right now and my settings are the following:

3.1 Ghz, 413.333 FSB
Vcore: 1.24v
RAM Timings: Auto-Auto-Auto-Auto. 5-5-5-31This board is EXTREMELY temperamental with RAM timings, so leave it on Auto if you want to OC.
DRAM: Auto
HT: 1.34v
NB: 1.4v
SB: Auto

Hopefully those settings will help you. Also, download Core Temp and try to see what your VID is. It can give you a good idea of how much OC'ing headroom you have.

Yeah I just joined I have been reading this forum and others trying to find all the info I can on the Q8300. I will try the settings you posted, I just don't want to go past 3.0ghz. I tried raising my fsb to 408 and it was stable but if I change it to 400 crash=(

Just tried the settings you posted but changed my fsb to 1600 and almost made it into windows. What should I set my fsb to get to 3.0ghz stable?

The FSB needs to be 1600 yes (Which by the way remember that's not the normal FSB, it's usually in the 400s or whatever, the FSB displayed in the BIOS is the QDR, or 4 times what the FSB is.) but I still need to know the VID for your CPU. Download Core Temp, install that, and tell me what your VID is, and then I can give you a good guess on what the vcore needs to be to support 3.0 Ghz

I also need you to tell me your Vcore in CPU-z, so I know how much vdroop you have. That can play a big part in OC'ing headroom.

That's not too bad, it's toward the upper range of the VID's though. Your Vcore I think is enough to support 3 Ghz, so that's fine. Your NB voltage is fine as well, I had mine pretty low at first. If you're having boot problems, change your NB voltage to about 1.44v. It goes up to 1.76v, so I'm sure some more voltage on it is okay.

And did you turn off the throttling features in the BIOS? CPU C1E should be disabled, thermal throttling should be, Speedstep should be disabled.

Also, what are the stock timings on your RAM, and what does CPU-z say they are?
