OCing Athlon II x4 640 - Page 3

Yes it is.
So last night I finished with a failed test with
CPU - 267 x 13.5 Mhz / 1.525 VCORE (temps are still ~55, max under 60 load)
NB - 267 x 10 Mhz / 1.260 VDDNB
HT - 267 x 7 Mhz / Stock
But it was really close.
As in, a test with 1.50 VCORE got through 2 passes of IntelBurnTest High, and didn't actually BSOD, instead just with an error "failed" message from IntelBurn.
Same thing happened at 1.5125, and lastly at 1.525V.

A terribly low wall don't you think? at 3.47Ghz? Honestly. >

I wonder though... would putting HT at a little over stock rather than the current under help a bit? I've seen posts saying +0.1V to NB and HT can help stability.

The Athlon II X4 640 is a notoriously bad overclocker. Mine was, and everyone else's who has the chip. And your's is no exception. Good luck getting stable at anything above 3.5GHz.

Wow, I sure wish I knew that before purchasing the damn thing.
I was heavily misled.

So I should be happy with 3.47 then? It got sooo close...

Well,my experiences with Athlon II's say you need more CPU/NB voltage, but you may just have gotten a marginal chip.I would push to atleast 1.57v vcore,as long as your temps stay below 52c you should be fine.Your CPU/NB overvolt should be able to take 1.4v if you have decent cooling. Also trying different bus speeds and multipliers-some times one is more stable than another(i.e 280ref -13x CPU-1:2 mem divider vs 240ref -14.5xCPU-1:3.33 mem divider. You may end up with the exact same speeds but you get there a different way.You just have to try different combos)

I got mine to 3.6 stable link I run my NB at 1.3, and my CPU voltage at ~1.52, set my ram voltage and timings to auto. How much are you increasing it by each pass?

That's a pretty high voltage on that board (1.57V) and I wouldn't deem it completely safe - even though it's a 95W TDP I did recommend he stay below 1.525V due to the unheatsinked VRMs. In addition, his temps are already edging past 60C (CPU though, not core)

1.57 seems a little scary. My highest temp ever was 57, and mostly they're around 55 C with 1.525V. Perhaps I could push another 0.005V?

Temps never spiked to 60 before, and they always stay at ~55 C with 1.525V, including the test I just did, which failed again (but again with no BSOD, just IntelBurn tells me it failed) so I think I may be able to risk a little extra, no?
