SB is nice, but this is currently one of the most irrelevant things about it.

AVX isn't widely used yet.

Depends on what is being done.

Even the 2500 is considerably faster in weakly threaded applications.

I have a buddy *cough* OCN member *cough*, has a 980x claims 4.3 ghz on a CM V8 with a single 120 fan.. Ummm, Run Linx on it
My 970 is stable at 4.1GHz with the stock cooler, in LinX with a 40000 problem size; it just gets to the upper 90s C.

A golden 980 can do 4.3 on the stock cooler, a bad one won't hit 4.3 on good water. Somewhere between 4 and 4.4GHz you run into a wall where temps need to be dozens of degrees lower, or volts massively higher to go any further.

Well since you ask for this. What problem is there with your current? I mean why the hell upgrade a top CPU for such a little difference?

he's maybe hyped by what SB can do..many people are..well some do have resources to burn well others are just itching..i was too pondering on how the upgrade will affect my needs..well if its just a few FPS on games it won't be a practical move to shift..well yes AVX is SB's flagship but i don't simply use it..i'd rather upgrade to a i7 970 or just wait till IB or the other flagship comes out or yet Bulldozer from AMD has the balls to compete..

I would only upgrade if you had a socket 775, quad or dual core. Saying that though a Q9550 running at 4GHz would still be fine. Any non HT dual cores is worth an upgrade as you would definitly see an improvement in overall system performance.

Also i bet a good amount of my reputation that ivy bridge will be on socket LGA 1155 and some of my rep that P67 will support it.

Oh, I definently like 775, my moms rocking my old e7500 at 3.6GHZ, but try playing GTA or BC@ on a dual core, it's not fun at all.

The Intel i7 980x is 32.1% percent faster than an Intel i5 2500k according to Anandtech Bench. Clearly, they are nowhere near equals.
The 2500k/2600k cannot come close to a fully utilised 980x. It's more or less common sense that they will win if 4 or less cores are used though as SB is faster clock for clock.

upgrading to SB is not needed as the 1366 CPU are still very good. Rather wait until the next platform is released. I upgraded from a Q9450 and i'm EXTREMEMLY happy, but my old platform was ancient compared 1366.
