Quick question on MyBook Essential

I have a 2TB MyBook Essential that I'm using just to make a backup copy of all my files every month, I'm not using any of the software that came with it, I just copied those to a USB stick incase I ever need to use the drivers again.

Other than that I've been using it as-is from the box, it seems to be working fine but would it be wise to reformat it, I know you have to format internal HDDs before you use them, so I'm just a bit put-off by this external being ready to use.

Also, I tried using the specific reformatting tool (WD Quick Formatter) that came on the external and got an error, if that's relevant.

I've never reformatted any HDD after buying before, probably because the process of installing an OS does it for me. My 1.5TB has never been formatted.

As far as I'm aware externals don't need to be formatted either. Even if they do just stick to the stock Windows reformatting tool, there's no need to install more software.

Okay I'll just leave it then, as I said, it seems to be holding and transferring my files back and forth fine, just wanted to be sure since it would be very lame to lose over a TB of files just because I didn't prepare it properly.
