My doubts over SLI

Thread Starter
I see a lot of people with sli but, ive been weary ever since i bought an asus dont remember which exactly but it had the 780i chipset, I had done some reasearch beforehand and read that the 7 series were just an updated 6 series with a nForce 200 PCI-E bridge

i had originally started out with a basic ecs black edition motherboard with a single pci-e 16x slot, and apon going to the asus board i saw a signifigant drop in fps in all games, in a game where i would get 600fps i now got 50-200fps

what do you guys think i should do? i thought maybe it was just a bad pcb so i returned the mobo for 1 of the same and still saw the same huge fps drop, now im using the gigabyte ep45-ED3L motherboard and its fantastic but i just aquired 2 gtx 470's and id love to sli them but i dont want to deal with knowing that the nvidia sli chip is robbing me of valuable clock cycles and feel like im only getting 30-50% increase where the rest is getting robbed

if anyone can clear this up and make sli worth getting, i would be glad to, but im not going to go way of intels I anything just to go sli when my q9550 is still pretty high end and flawless at 3.83ghz

So from what I understand your debating dropping in two 470's...

Put them in and find out, you wont be regretting it later.

You don't need SLI. Ditch that 450 for a 570 and keep the setup you have as-is. It will be faster than two 450s, and you won't have the headache or possible failure of trying for the same clocks on a used 780i.

This.

I would go for the best single GPU before sli...Less hassle IMO...

Only way I would recommend SLI is if you were going to fold on them both...

`Q9550 @ 3.4 bottlenecks 470s in SLI.

As far as i know, you need 3.8 to SLI them @ stock speeds.

I recommend a single GTX 570.

The GTX 570 is a sick card, of course i own two, and i had to go buy a 1kw PSU, luckily too because the system hit 980watts from the plug. Thos guys that says 800watter is ok, well i have a 1kw PSU that is rated gold from sparkle and it goes head to head with the AX1kw, well turns out you need that kind of PSU if you are going to OC anything. I calculate 300watts pull from each card when OCed with 1.1v at 950 core 2200mem.

I ended up putting one card in each system. They are sick.
