Computer doesn't recognize OS on drive

Thread Starter
I have a P5Q with a Q6600.
I installed Windows 7 onto it a few months ago.
Now, when I plug the OS drive into it.. it doesn't recognize OS.

I've got a bunch of stuff I didn't back up.
Is there anything I can do?

well, depending on how you installed it, the boot master record is prob on another drive. you can most likely recover the data using another computer.

No, it's more complicated than that, unfortunately.

I have a Software JBOD on that OS.

MBR.. thanks for the tip. I'll plug in every HDD around.

I have had this problem a couple times, try switching the drive type in your bios from AHCI to IDE or vice versa, try to boot it to windows, then switch it back to whatever you like... Hope this helps

it is the mbr. the rom on your mobo is trying to start whatever os you had on the other drives, it doesn't know that you have windows 7 installed and want to start it.

insert your windows 7 install cd, boot to it, then from in there click repair. there are also manual mbr commands you can control using the command prompt within the windows 7 install cd.

i have done this more than one time. pm me for more info

edit: if you just want to get your data off of it, but are unable to boot to it, boot using an ubuntu live cd (its free to download), then you can mount your windows drive within ubuntu and save important files to a flash drive/external hard drive, etc.

don't do this. it will format your drive and you will have to reinstall windows to whatever format you choose. if you don't mind me asking, did you take the windows 7 hdd out, then put in another hdd and install like ubuntu or something on that drive? if so it is definately your master boot record.

Format the drive? how do you figure? I guess don't do it if other people say it will format the harddrive but I've done this MANY times and never had a problem... When I try to push an overclock Ill get a message that says the OS is not recognized, I go into bios switch over to IDE mode, boot, restart and switch to AHCI mode which I installed under, and im golden... Also whenever I update my bios it automatically switches to IDE mode, so I'm having trouble believing that it will cause a format to take place.

well maybe it doesn't format it, but when i was doing my last build, i installed windows7 and all the drivers and programs in ide mode, and in the bios if i tried to change it to ahci it would tell me that if i did so it would erase the drive, so i left it in ide.

im probably wrong about the ide/ahci thing, but oh well.

try the windows 7 cd method i recommended above^

If all else fails you can just make a Linx boot cd/ flash drive, mount the drive and get your stuff off it...

drive type? wont format your drive between ahci, ide, compat, or whatever. it merely changes how the sata chipset functions, doesnt effect the data on the drive. so heres an idea. look up hirens boot cd. using mini xp, which runs from the disc, copy data to a flash drive. if you cant recognize drive via mini xp check bios settings for sata/ide chipset, then see if its formatted in something weird under xp disc mgmt. hirens also has mbr/ntldr tools so check that out.
