Weirdest problem - HP machine

Hey,

I have an HP Pavillion Desktop computer someone asked me to take a look at.

Basically what it is doing is nothing. When the power button is hit nothing happens - no fans spin, no drives start to move, nothing.

So I switched out the power supply to test expecting to see the machine boot up right away, and much to my surprise it didn't frown.gif
I thought this was a little weird so the next thing I did was unhook all unnecessary components (including the memory) and I tried to power the machine on - still nothing.

Tonight I was playing around with it to see if I could get it to work and much to my surprise when I went to power it on it actually came up eek.gif
Immediately though I powered it down and took a look inside and realized I had nothing hooked up - so I hooked everything back up (including the 4 pin power connector to the mother board). I tried again to boot it and nothing happened.

So I started retracing my steps and eventually I found that the system will only turn on if the 4 pin power connector to the motherboard isn't plugged in. The other thing that i noticed is that when I do power it on I get nothing going to the monitor and after about 15 seconds the CPU fan and case fan stop spinning.

motherboard is: M2N68 - LA

has anyone seen behavior like this before because I am stomped on what exactly is causing the issue. My gut tells me there is something not okay with the motherboard but I honestly don't know.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Cheers

Sorry I should have mentioned as well that the CPU is an AMD (I am sure you guys new that already but I just wanted to confirm biggrin.gif)

Well by boot I mean that at least I get the fans spinning and it looks like it is going through its regular boot up process. However, I do not get anything display to the monitor and the CPU fan and case fan stop spinning after about 15 seconds. sorry for not clarifying that.

With the 4 pin power connector connected the system does absolutely nothing.

Seriously eh?
Just so I understand, what about the behavior makes you think that?
Because this one really stomped me and I would like to try and wrap my head around it.

thank you for the responses though guys!

oh haha. my apologies
personal experience ftw! biggrin.gif

I had a feeling that is what it might be... but that whole 4 pin power connector really threw me off!

Thank you though for sharing some of the experience you definitely saved me a giant headache!

I will start looking for a replacement

It has an ASUS M2N nock off with the bad capacitors. Hopefully it didnt fry the CPU too.
what cpu and ram does it have?
with a little luck, you can replace the board
(if it didnt fry the cpu/ram, and figuring out the hp fp header pinouts can be a pain)
else, just get a new case and board, re-use the cd/psu/hd/cpu/ram and your set to go

that is crap-o-lay
I found it sort of strange that when I went to the Asus website this version of the board isn't even listed there. Why would Asus brand a board and post information about it on their website? Do a lot of companies do this? I think this is the first time I have actually encountered this (im a newbie a suppose).

Ahh, this is definitely what I was hoping to be able to do! But I am extremely terrified about the CPU/RAM being ko-ed as well frown.gif. I don't want to go out and buy a replacement board and find out the CPU is toast as well. I am not entirely sure of the exact CPU that is in it now (I haven't pulled the heat sink off yet) but I know it is in the AM2 socket family and the memory is DDR2 PC2-5300. Its a bit of an older system so I think if it ends up being more then just the board it would be better to move to something a little newer - what do you think?

Thanks for the responses guys!!

Cheers
