Auto batteries aren't designed for this purpose, they are meant to give a short burst of energy (cranking power), not energy over a long period of time.

If you wanted, you could use a deep cycle battery, those are designed to give power over a longer period of time at the expense of cranking power.

But really regular lead acid batteries can be dangerous because they produce hydrogen when they are being charged.

If you really wanted to get into it and pull a UPS apart to install a new battery then the best bet would be LiPo's. You can get 12v (11.1v) 10000mAh batteries for under $25 each and about 5 of them (in parrellel) will last you an hour at a drain of 600w.

Just sayin....

Edit: This is a sarcasm post. I WOULD NOT suggest doing this as LiPo's enjoy catching fire and exploding if put under to much load or charged to long. But could be done if correct measures were taken
