Case Airflow Suggestions? CPU air cooling suggestions?

Thread Starter

I added arrows to show cool air in, hot air out. Anyone have suggestions?

FYI: Idle temps (via HWMonitor)
Athlon II X3 445 26C (all three cores)
GTX 460 34C

Also, I am thinking about upgrading my CPU fan/heatsink. (currently stock) The stock fan makes a weird scratching noise, but not constantly, it goes in and out. It is easily the loudest of my fans. Anyone have any *relatively silent* (I just don't want a jet engine, I sleep ~15ft from the computer) AM3 air cooling suggestions?

I was looking at the Hyper212+ (here), but I am wondering how I would orientate it, and if it would even fit. Also, would I just remove my CPU cone filter? (See first picture, it is on the left)

If anyone has any suggestions on OC'ing/unlocking, I would love to hear that as well. Fellow OCN member IEATFISH and I spent an hour or so on it, but ended up just leaving it at stock; couldn't get anything out of it. :/

Honestly unhook that stupid vent it doesn't work.. what case do you have?
I'd do the hyper212+ is a east wets style with some gently typhoons on it, change the rear fan to a 120mm too.

Well 26c is pretty cool, you could just replace the stock fan with a silent one?

But i your looking to OC it then you will need a better cooler for sure, silver arrow, D14? I don't know much about the hyper 212 sorry.

Hah, well I had no idea what my case was, but I just found it.(here) It's relatively old(No HD Audio, only AC '97).

And I agree on the point about getting a 120mm in the rear. Any suggestions for the fan?

Yeah, I am very interested in OC'ing/unlocking it. But, I also don't really want to spend more than 40 or so on the CPU cooling.

I like my gentle typhoons and Gelid wings. the Hyper21_2 + should fit into the case okay. The hyper21@+ is a great little cooler especially for the price.

There is also position to mount the fan on the side panel, it would blow air right where my gfx card sits. Is a 120mm a good investment to throw there as well?

Also, there is a filter at the front of the case as well. Do you recommend removing it as well?

Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah adding another 120mm on the bottom should work fine, i'd leave the filter in myself and put a better fan in front. Remember to remove the side vent, in fact i'd say the side panel fan might even be a must.

Sweet. Thanks :] I appreciate it. I'm going to shop around and see what I can find.

definitly add a side panel fan. the cpu cooler vent will need to go if you ever want to get a better cooler in there, there wont be enough room. As for stock cooling though i had made a jimmy vent like thatand it brought my temps down by about 10 degrees at the time (i had a very bad case for airflow.

Also adding a rear 120mm will be a good investment. Leave the front filter and replace the fan with a better one if possible. You could also add another fan on the inside of your case behind the drive bay parellel with the front fan, also blowing air in the same direction. that will help speed up the intake on the front.

oh also by the way, do all the case fans before your cpu cooler, if you get better airflow in your case it may keep your cpu temps down without the need for a new cooler (lower temps means your cpu fan wont kick up its RPM's so it wont be as noisy)
