Phantom SB Build - Page 2

2600K: My initial build plan was around $2400 including monitor. I spent the last month of planning making cuts where gaming performance would suffer least. I decreased PSU size, moved down a couple levels on motherboard, etc until my final build cost was ~$1450 including monitor. The 2500K was the toughest decision, but I think I got a lot of bang for my buck by prioritizing gaming over benchmarks. I run Crysis on max settings @1920x1200 with 35-60 fps after minor OC'ing.
Hyperthreading and 2MB L3 is pretty much a non-issue for gaming. Now that I've started folding, I sometimes wish I'd gone 2600K for -bigadv, but I'm happy with ~28500 ppd between cpu and gpu.

This weekend I reapplied the thermal paste on the CPU for a ~8C drop. I then raised the OC from 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz, and my temps are now slightly higher than they were with the 4.0GHz and old paste. Core 1 peaks around 62C during Prime95, but settles to 58C. The rest stay under 55C at equilibrium load. Hopefully we will see this drop as the paste settles, though I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not AS5 has a noticeable break-in.

Also installed Ubuntu 10.10, with root on the Velociraptor and /home on the Caviar Black. Boots in about 5 seconds, woot! Can't wait for the SSD later this spring.

Got some new equipment coming in today to finish up the build.

To improve my sound situation: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 and Creative Inspire T3130 2.1.

I could never find a definitive answer to whether or not the hyper212+ will fit with the side 200mm fan, and I decided to just buy one and try it (instead of taking out one of the existing fans. That would require me to take out the mobo. This decision was ~50% laziness and 50% "I just didn't think about it recently", so I just pushed the "buy" button).

Also got two new 120mm Cooler Master R4's (with a 4 pin fan splitter) for a balanced push/pull on the Hyper212+. So I'll have a leftover 120mm and possibly a leftover 200mm. May have wasted some money (especially/potentially on the 200mm), but spare parts aren't the worst thing in the world. I'm gonna take some Prime95 runs with RealTemp generating log files to find the effect of each addition.

I've been working on some code to interface with RealTemp log files anyway, so it will be a good chance to push that project forward. I'm modifying HFM.NET to report my temps on the generated website, but I keep getting distracted by overclocking and tweaking my system.

Quick necro-update: I HAZ LEDS. Also I'm at 4.8GHz, still trying to find the best stable voltage though, so blue screens once a day or so. I'm at 1.4, but I think I can go down a notch or two. Temps are 40C/70C.

Notice in the last one that I constantly curl my toes like a freak.
