Have you fixed your setting through ALSAmixer? Sometimes it has the internal preamps messed up. My personal settings are to have the first listed "master" to 74 and the PCM to 100 to give a preamp of 0dB all-around. It's amazing how much better things sound when you don't have conflicting preamps(not sure what else to call it).
Amarok may look pretty but it doesn't have floating point output bit depth (it actually makes a difference) and the crossfade built into (which you can't turn off) it pisses me off so much. Why the hell would anyone want the beginning and end of their songs cut off? I have to say that Audacious only fails in the GUI being a bit dated. But hey, it's an audio player and with how good it sounds I don't care how it looks.
I can't even stand listening to music in windows through iTunes now. If only the ipod I had could do floating point output.
