Yeah, I'm a HUGE cashcow for Sony with the whole 4 PS3 games I bought, 3 of them used and one that came with the console itself.

bottom line my PS3 is mine(I don't actually own a PS3 but if i did) and if I want to hack it to run bootleg games or ubuntu that's my business.
Sony can void my warranty and ban me from PSN at best but they feel the need to be greedy so they can go DIAF as far as I care.
Yes, Geohot is greedy. He threatened Sony. "Give me a job or I release this to the public." That's blackmail, and blackmail is illegal.

And Sony can do whatever they want with the Software. You signed the EULA agreeing that you would not reverse engineer the OS, and that you would accept any modifications to the OS that Sony released. So, no, you're in the wrong, whether you want to accept it or not. Reality is reality, logic is logic. You and 99% of the people in this thread fail to comprehend this.

This feature was actually REMOVED because of him originally. Sony removed the other OS feature after Geohot announce there was a flaw in it that would allow him to hack the PS3. The linux performance was horrible anyways, you'd get better performance from a $300 netbook.

You realise "Other OS" was removed because GeoHot was using it to hack the PS3?

Of course they don't realize it. They have this knee-jerk reaction to call a company greedy, and a monopoly, and evil no matter what the reasoning is.

So yes you're a smart fella but there are dozens of people who go and actually pay more than 100$ for a small box with 1 DVD inside which is called a video game. And it doesn't change the fact that some slant eyed, cigar smoking, white cat stroking man is getting richer by overcharging these games and your buying used games is just a temporary solution because there are people paying such astonomical money to these games and you're buying from them.

Sony had it coming, I mean I doubt many people really bought the PS3 just because they wanted to have Linux installed on it, but the minority that did intend to have a linux setup is rightfully pissed after Sony blocked Linux support.
The hackers pretty much saw this opening and expanded on it and used this for their excuse as to why they hacked it. Its not like this excuse will hold up in court or something like that but at least it gives them a tiny moral boost.

Anyway I have not hacked my PS3 yet though I do plan to do so in the future, especially after lots of homebrew stuff will be available.

This thread makes me laugh, if you wanted to run linux go buy a computer. Just looking, it appears as if the majority of the people defending the hacking don't even own a PS3.

Im pretty sure everyone would be singing different tunes if it was their million/billion dollar, successful, business which suddenly became at risk to lose major profits because some ignorant hacker decided that he was some gift to the world.

Im getting really sick of the self entitlement that everyone seems to be getting way too accustomed to.

I never said it did. But the DMCA is an american bill, and GeoHot is an american citizen, and he is being sued in an american court.

You are just grasping at straws here.

Geohot and his chronies all deserve a swift kick in the nuts. Their greed has pushed Sony into a corner, and Sony has responded.

"Damn the average user! We don't care what hurts them, as long as us, the minority, get what we want like spoiled little 3 year old brats, that's all that's important!"

Get over yourself. Sony has a business to run and customers to protect.
Because Big Brother knows best!

As I said earlier, just because you enjoy the feel of Sony shafting you doesn't mean we all do.

From what I understand of the situation, the reason the Other OS functionality was removed was because GeoHot found out that Sony was artificially inhibiting the GPU while running a different OS. He bypassed it, and in retaliation Sony took the Other OS function away, claiming piracy was the reason for it.

Now, GeoHot has brought the function back, and he's being sued [illegally I might add].

So, no, some of us are actually informed and willing to stand up for our rights as a consumer. IF you don't mind getting walked all over by Sony, then let them. You may proceed with drinking your Corporate Shaft Kool-Aide now.

Sigged for great justice.

About the article: Sony going on rampage seems kind of exaggerated but if the hackers did reverse engeenered some code, well, Sony can sue them.
Not saying it's right... it's not to protect themselves now (it's too late!), it's just to take revenge. Like some angry kid whose favourite candy you stole: he'll ask his cop father to jail the crap out of you even if it's too late for the said candy. Sony should be above that I think, and take that opportunity to find a way to sell more hardware (sure they're mainly doing profit on software but hey, you don't always get what you want).

Basically: Sony is in its own right, but still that's not the best reaction, it's almost stupid actually.
