Broken HTC Desire, Need Opinions

Thread Starter
I bought myself a Telus branded HTC Desire in August shortly after it was released in Canada. At the time I was really excited because it was the only 1ghz phone (other than the iPhone). I was coming from an iPhone 3GS, and I was looking forward to the freedom of android.

After a 2 months it started overheating and shutting itself off if I browsed the web on 3G for more than 5 minutes. I figured that I could live with it since I only use data for transit times. After another few months (early December) the problem had gotten so bad that I could only send 2 texts before it would overheat and at one point the edge of the back cover by the USB port started melting. So I took it in right away and Telus shipped it out to HTC for me and gave me an HTC Hero as a loaner.

I was stuck with the hero until a week ago when I got my phone back from repair. I was told that HTC had replaced the mainboard with a newer revision that didn't suffer from the overheating issues.

Now a week later my Desire is messed up again. Regardless of if its unrooted or using a custom ROM then it gets barely any wifi signals. I don't get any wifi connection unless I'm in the same room as my router or very close to it. My bed is on the opposite side of the wall that my router is mounted on and if I turn away from the router and put my body between my phone and the router then I get absolutely no signal. This isn't an issue on my parents iPhone or blackberry so its not an issue with the router.

So I really don't want to be stuck with a Hero again for another 2 months (especially since i can't take off the sense software which is laggy as hell, especially on an older phone like the hero). Should I get my dad (he's been with telus for nearly 9 years now so they do pretty much everything to keep him happy, he even got his newest plan at nearly half off) to call telus and ask them for a different model phone? Has anyone had a similar experience with telus or another cell company?

And btw I know for a fact that its not an issue with me rooting the phone because my friend ran his Desire with the stock software and he had the exact same overheating issue.

Can you get the company to give you a free upgrade to a newer phone? I don't know what phones that company carries.

They carry one of the galaxy s phones which is the only one that they have that's similar in specs to mine. However I'm not sure if they'll let me exchange phones since there's pretty much no competition in canada and I still have just over 2 years left out of my 3 year contract.
