[Gadgetsteria] Motorola XOOM Coming To Best Buy For $799. WiFi Gimped By Verizon.

Quote:
The first real challenger to Apple’s might iPad is getting a bit more official with the latest Best Buy circular spotted above. Scheduled for release on February 24th, this do-it-all Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet from Motorola is packed to the gills with loads of features and a new design. As you can see, the tablet is priced outside of many peoples’ reach at $799.99 — an unfortunate revelation. But what’s most worrying, and frankly a reason to consider a different tablet purchase, is the verbiage hidden in the fine print:
WTH? Forcing a user to pay for a free service, in this case WiFi? Combined with the $800 price tag the XOOM just became a lot less desirable.

Get a Galaxy Tab instead.

Either get the XOOM and wait for an unlocked rom to come. Won't take much.

It's not even a "service", it is just WiFi, which is a network adapter.

The price tag makes me gag - the iPad ends up being cheaper. Of course, when that beast comes to Canada, the price will be inflated, so that pretty much every laptop will be cheaper but able to run a full OS like Win7...

@OP:

Title like this:

[Gadgetsteria] Motorola XOOM Coming To Best Buy For $799. WiFi Gimped By Verizon.

Then a quote from the article, like this:

Quote:
***?! While cellular data is a big feature to include on a tablet, it is a consumer’s choice to pay for said feature. Gimping WiFi until they pay for cellular data effectively renders the hardware useless until you fork over the required money. Speaking of which, the data plans themselves come in at 1GB/3G/5GB/10GB for $20/$35/$50/$80 respectively — not exactly “competitive” in our eyes either.
Then read this thread.

Ha, I give it a week before hackers unlock this for people for free.

Also, there should be a lawsuit against Verizon for doing this.

Then read this thread.

Fixed original format. Sry

And while I don't doubt a hack will be available in the near future to get around this ridiculous stipulation, the fact that we even have to talk about it in the first place is pretty sad.

What a fail product. I'm not an Apple fan but when a choice between Apple products and something else it's always Apple. That's why 40% of Android owners are switching to the iPhone. Add on the fact that you have a ridiculous feature like this.

Obviously Motorola is to butt hurt to understand that after selling the worse droid phones of all time. The Droid, Droid 2 and the Droid X. I know Verizon is behind this but as a manufacturer you shouldn't let this happen.

So much fail.
