Did he imply he was using scripts? Besides, even good hackers use other people's software, because it saves them valuable time in, say, a pentest or such. Even if you do hacking in what people call the "right way" you are still using other people's software and tools. Your feeling of superiority makes you think you look cool, in all hypocrisy.

Besides, I agree, in legal and proper environments, hacking/cracking/owning people's boxes is a blast. Why do you think hacker cons like Defcon and Shmoocon are so popular within the infotech community? Not to mention educational and can help improve security: you have to know how to break a system in order to fix it.

That's assuming he's using WEP..

Usually I will do them a favor and change the SSID of these open routers to

"FREE INTERNET"
"CHANGE ME"
"UNSECURED"

Or in one case I put my phone number as the SSID, they called and I explained kindly what they were doing.

most people go to wal mart, buy a router and just plug it in.

I am Comptia NET+ certified, the best ecryption is WPA2-AES, do not use WEP.

Personally I ran 1000Base-T though the house and cabled everything in except my wifes laptop, my windows phone and her android. I don't broadcast an SSID, DHCP is disabled, using DDWRT I turned down the transmit power and I use MAC filtering.
