Should I add another 2gb Ram?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I have 2x2gb Corsair ram at the moment, and have a OCZ Reaper 2gb stick that is running at the same speed (slightly different timing). Should I use it in my sig rig so that it I have 6gb but in single channel? Would I see performance increases/decreases?

Thanks.

You won't see performance increases in benchmarks, but your computer should "feel" snappier by adding 2GB. Since you're there, with 6GB you could potentially disable pagefile.
For loosing dual channel, if I'm not mistaking you could see some 5-10% performance degradation in some apps (less in games, more in archivers, zero in everything else).

Hmm, so there are pro's and con's, although I think the con's outweigh the pro's, im going to stick with the 4gb.

Thanks and +rep.

I'd say don't do it. Your system running in single channel mode will be only running at half the bandwidth so you'll see decreased performance i would have thought!?

Someone i'm sure will enlighten us shortly

On a side note I'd pick the 2GB if it was a good deal and if the rig is going to stay with you some more. DDR2 prices are only going to rise due to being phased out, so even unused (as stupid as it may sound) they are a good investment. At some point the pros will outweigh the cons as RAM usage only goes up.

Yeah, but if you would get another 2GB you'd only lose a couple of dosens of bucks and gain some performance - while not getting even a slight decrease, sense you would be running again 2x2 + 2x2 = Dual Channel

Get the 2GB more, going to dual channel you will see a massive increase in all around performance, even everyday performance. Even the smallest tasks actually. The degradation is so much more than 5-10%.
