Black screen with cursor + password problem

Hi!

Right so basically starting off im the manager of a small gadget trading shop in the uk, if anybody knows the shop CEX its basically the same thing but just the one just to give you a background of myself.

I buy laptops and phones ect ect, anyway on to the problem.

Bought a dell inspirion 1110 of a customer, police checked, all clear ect ect. My mistake was not testing it in front of the customer, i just made sure it turned on and didnt have a huge crack on the screen which it doesnt, anyway hardware wise the laptop is fine, but im getting the black screen with cursor problem on both normal windows and safe mode.

unfortnately the computer doesnt have a cd rom so i created a cd on another pc and copied the files over to a removeable HDD, booted from the hdd and went to begin repairs only to be stopped by a login screen, again my mistake didnt get any passwords or anything of the customer so have no way of knowing the password, also cant contact them to ask, so my question is is there anyway i can bypass the login screen and be able to run a repair method to try and fix the black screen cursor issue or is it looking like a complete windows re-install?

Wait. Is this like a hard drive/BIOS password? Doesn't seem like it since you say there is a cursor. I'm assuming since you say Inspirion 1100. It's probably Windows XP era laptop. Call up the person and get the password? I'd like not to tell you how to hack into someones computer without them giving you the password.

its just a standard user account password id assume, and the laptop is windows 7, and yea its a laptop i bought so wiping the system isnt really a huge issue just a bit of a pain id like to avoid really but it looks like its my only choice.

On the subject of that would i need to get a portable cd-rom to install windows 7 or can i do it via a removeable hdd?

Fresh install would be best anyways.
But download a legit Windows 7 ISO, and basically burn it to USB or even DVD.

to remove a password in windows 7 use Hiren's Boot Disk, but you may just have to restore the computer to factory. Holding F8 when the computer boots should give you the repair option, as well as safe mode, safe mode with networking etc. You can try a repair and if that doesnt work you can run a factory reset (system recovery)

Of course he could, but in situations where it's not someone's files on the HDD etc. You shouldn't tell them how to get to them. Not to mention, if he's going to be reselling this laptop or anything. Why would he not do a clean install?
Even though it isnt the case now he may come across a customer who can't remember their password and it gives him the option of removing it for them as a service. Also its important to know how to use the built in repair function of win 7. In this case yes I would just do a clean install, as I am assuming he is going to resell.

As for getting to the files on the hard drive, that password wont do anything. He could just pull the drive and access it with another computer

Oh of course. You could also brute force your way in. Trust me. I always tend to have a side of caution and not believe people. Just in case they are lying and maybe it's their brothers computer or something. You know? I'd rather not help someone in their black hat activities or learning how to. Not that I don't believe OP though.

besides, I'm not telling him anything he couldn't find out if he just googled it

Installing Windows 7 isn't a pain. It takes less than 45 minutes from installing to desktop.
