I have two desktops plugged into the same router, my family also has two laptops connected to the network via wireless.

I just want to be able to share files between both desktops because there my computers, how is it done?

You could set up Homegroup if all computers have Windows 7.

Well theres alot of ways, you can set up shares which would be the easiest.

You can also use a program called DropBox for smaller files (documents, pictures, etc).

With file sharing make sure that it's actually enabled in Network and Sharing Center. Are ALL the systems running Windows 7? if so this is very easy. Simply go to start and type "Home Group", create a group on 1 computer and than join with the rest. Make sure they are all the same time because it will not work if the clocks are not synchronized.

If you are running different verions of windows, make sure that all sharing is enabled in the networking area, it should be on the front page in the middle or so. Once all the laptops/desktops have it enabled, go to Start > Computer, and then look on the left and you should see a "Network" icon with all the laptops/desktop's names displayed below it.

Drag and drop files into the folders you see fit, new folders can be created on the desktops/laptops by creating a new folder and sharing it.

\\\\computername\\c$

if you just want to give/take files quickly.

Else I would set up shares on the two laptops accessible to auth'd users or Computername Users and then \\\\computername to display the shares on the other laptop.

Heres a MS KB that explains it a bit more:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

If you have windows 7 on both PCs, set up a home group and some reading to do that can be found here :
