System - Random Shutdowns (Only When OC)

Thread Starter
It would seem that the warnings of other members for me were all right. My computer just today has started these random shutdowns. I'll be in use of it, and then it will just shutdown out of nowhere, no blue screens, no warnings, I don't even think the CPU overheats. I could be wrong about that but to my knowledge CPU overheating usually cause system hang, not imminent shutdown.
So that could be ruled out, but then what else? Is my crappy motherboard the cause or is my crappy Power supply under-juiced?

I was OCing it to 4Ghz, got unstable, backed down to 3.8 with extra cores unlocked, and it was stable till the shutdown fest which began earlier today. After turning off the extra cores and running factory speed I was stable. Then I re-enabled the cores, now it's 4-cores again and not shutting down and still at factory speed. Even a low CPU voltage wont cause random instant shutdown so I'm really puzzled. I'm thinking mobo or psu, suggestions are welcome

download a temperature monitoring program like speed fan and tell us what the temps are idle and under load, Also what voltage are you running at on your OC?

Right now, I'm running the speed at factory which is 3.3 and have the extra cores unlocked and the idle soc temp is 29C. Cool n quiet seems to be on so the low temp according to HW is .97, running P95 just now for few minutes puts vCore at 1.35 and socket temp at 47C.

So a cpu overheat can cause instant shutdown huh?

Although 47C is not too warm I get the feeling it shouldn't be that warm. How much thermal paste is really supposed to go under that heatsink? I feel such a noob right now it's not even funny

If you have a case speaker plugged in, you would hear something before this shutdown (if it was thermal). A random shutdown most likely points at powersupply. Download OCCT and run the power supply test, will stress your CPU and GPU to the max and see if that turns your computer off. If not then it probably has to do with just a bad OC and not power.

yes, heat can cause an auto shutdown but you won't reach that point until around 63C, so I am guessing heat isn't the problem.

Try bumping the Voltage to 1.375V check the temps and if they are ok see if it auto shuts-down again.

But overall I would venture to guess this is a stability problem with the unlocked CPU and not a problem else where in the system.

Edit: While you at it test PSU like link above stated, but I would say it is a stability issue with not enough voltage, so if 1.375V doesn't work try 1.4V, but I wouldn't go above that because the temperature increase wouldn't justify the OC.

I'm going to do that right away. Is it better to OC before running the OCCT power supply test or should I leave it at stock?

no heatsink on the mosfets either...
return to stock and lock the cores back up.

leave your OC on when you test the PSU.

Thanks for the suggestions "B NEGATIVE", I'll keep the cores unlocked and run factory speed to see the results. Seems to be stable in P95 thus far so far so good. As far as the phases go, I wonder how many people know that you can disable active phase control in the bios, it really helps when you do that.
