Install all the standoffs in holes that the motherboard will go over. Even if there isn't a hole in the mobo for that stand off still install it. This will give you plenty of support

I run everything on a bench for testing and OCing before putting it in a case.

If all is good I take it apart and mount the motherboard into the case before CPU/HSF/RAM etc (put the backplate on first if your case doesn't have a cutout)

Standoffs yes, shorting the board is bad.

Don't see anything wrong with the rest of it.

Thanks, when my board comes I will make sure no standoffs are touching the board besides the ones that have proper holes.

Also, I always do a cardboard box test first. Last time I did but then I forgot the standoffs.

Eh, no.

Don't install stand-offs where there are no holes in the motherboard for them. Solder points drop below the bottom of the board and can contact the stand-off and short, not likely, but possible, given the assortment of cases and their stand-offs thread positions.

1. Get some more stand-offs, they are cheap and can be found at many places. No reason to NOT have them where they should be.

2. If you motherboard doesn't have a hole in it where you screwed in a stand-off, unscrew the stand-off, it doesn't need to be there.

3. I would plug in my motherboard power before installing any secondary cards, just don't plug the PSU in. It will just give you more room for your hands inside the case to plug things in.

4. Read the manual. Srsly. Not trying to be a jerk, just the first thing anyone building a PC should do.

personally, from being a system builder 12 months + i put the power supply in last. as it gives mroe remove to manoeuvre everything else inside the case and then route around them, how man cables are you going to realistically put under the motherboard etc? its such a mission to put everything when theres a ***** ton of cables in the case, especially if its small... so putting everthing in apart from gpus/ expansion cards and it helps to show you where to route the cables etc i think my pics are proof.

Looks relatively correct. Rubber is obviously not an issue touching anything on your motherboard, but your entire motherboard (every single screw hole on the motherboard, not on the back plate of the case) should have its own standoff and screw. This is very important to prevent flexing with other cards and heatsinks mounted on it and to prevent stuff from shifting around and making contact.

PSU goes in for me whenever it makes sense. First is usually the motherboard & heatsink backplate (if there is one) being set up and then put in in the case. Once the motherboard is mounted in the case, then I would go ahead and install CPU -> Heatsink -> RAM (Note: The order here will change depending on clearance issues/ heatsink height/etc.)

Hard drives/DVD Drive (people still use optical drives? =D)/other 3.5/5.25" bays should really be installed last... all they do is cramp the case up and they are the easiest to get at.

Static discharge is not a major player in ruining computer parts, just be careful. If you spending alot of time walking across a carpeted house in the dead of winter getting parts... its probably REALLY smart to touch your case once (metal part of it) to ground yourself prior to picking up your CPU.

The beautiful thing about building a PC is that its modular... so with careful planning, you can leave yourself plenty of space and options as you build so you can upgrade without banging things around and re-routing cables in 6 months. IE: if you going to go watercooling in 6 months and your wiring your cables to the back of the case to hide them all, it probably smart to leave some 4 pin molex power somewhere you can easily get at.

Sound like you know what your doing for the most part. Just don't cut corners to make things happen faster. Do it right the first time. If something isn't lining up on a part that thousands of people before you have used without any issues, chances are your doing something wrong.

Last bit of advice, never force anything.

i think this may be personal preference of me, but its easier to do it all outside the case i.e. cpu + cooler then its easier to move aroudn and get to bits the back plate wont drop out of postion etc, and it can be horrible to tr and screw in a cpu heatsink when theres fan cables etc knocking around. it just means you have easier access to everything.

so, prep the case
1.add hdds + odds and move the front panel plugs behind the mobo tray or just out the way. + put stand offs in etc.
2. do the motherboard stuff, cpu - heatsink - ram or ram then heat sink depending on clearance.
3. chuck the mobo in, (well, dont chuck it) screw it all in.
4.put the PSU in and then route cables, plug them in, then cable tie. and then sata /IDE
5. last put in expansion cards/gpus. plug in, done.
