HTPC/Server Build options

Thread Starter
Hi,

Got a few questions about a HTPC I'm planning on. I've got the option of these two combinations:

-AMD Athlon x2 5200 with an Asus M3A76-CM using intergrated 760G
-Intel Pentium E2140 with a Biostar board plus an ATI 4350.

Ideally out of the two I need the lowest power and best performing for Blu-ray playback. I'm not wanting to spend much at all on the system, as I'm using bits I have laying around. I have another £50/60 to spend on a case, remote and possibly a Satellite card.

Case I thought about is this. Looks fine for the job. Dimentions need to be about the size of a Sky+ Box.

Thanks!

the amd will be better as its cheaper, what kind of tv will it be playing on?

Go with the AMD as it's a dual core. Why not go find a cheap used vid card and put it in there?

Its a 42" 1080p Bravia. Both the setups I have around the house, the 5200 and Asus board I got from an old PC of a mate's for nothing. The Intel setup is currently being used as the office PC for my parents.

I suppose I could put a video card in the AMD setup. Would it be worth just stealing the 4350 and parents make do with the onboard G31 chipset?

Thanks for the replies!

The HD3000 on the 760G does not support hardware acceleration: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_700...rated_graphics

You would be better off with the Intel build even though it will use more power.

Thanks, thats a bit of a shame!

Now I just need to make sure that the case fits and I should be good to go. I'm planning on using Windows 7 Home Premium, does it come with support for Blu-ray? Bit of a stupid question, sorry

Not stupid at all, with most BR- drives outthere you still need the correct software to read blu- ray disk, this is what i hear alot of people use. It is the best , i cant say for sure it is either this program, this Corel win dvd pro 2010,Roxio CinePlayer BD.

I would try to find the first due to i heard good things about it, however it isn't perfect for people still have problems trying to get their receivers to output true dolby sound.

Thanks, I just realised I've got Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 BD Edition with the Blu-ray drive, I guess this would add support for Blu-ray in Windows 7?

Can I just use the codecs or will I have to use the software? Would be nice if I could just use Windows Media Centre for ease of use for my parents.

Thanks, I could use it, however would the Intel G31 (3100GMA?) be able to support simple games such as Bejeweled, Jewel Quest, etc? Thats the most strenuous use their PC gets, so I could use the AMD setup and 4350.

I think I've decided to go for the AMD and Asus with the 4350, and mod the PCI-E x1 so the graphics card can go there and, as the cooler is dual slot, use the other two PCI slots for a sound card and satellite card.
