I get this free for 3 months as an early adoptor. But to be fair the mobile radio wasn't anything special. Spotify would be a better choice.

I stopped subscribing to Last.FM when they doubled their subscription and added nothing.

EDIT:

Also the article suggests the subscription is for mobiles when it is in actual fact for their entire site.

Why not just pay for a Pandora One upgrade then? If you really use it that much, then I guarantee it will be worth the time you save not listening to ads. Plus, it helps keep them in business!

I thought that doesn't work anymore. It looks at the hours related to a computer AND the account, so more accounts doesn't help.

No it's not. The article is correct. The new subscription fees are only for mobile devices (read: Android/iOS) and other gadgets. Going to Last.fm in your browser as well as Windows Phone 7 users and Xbox Live users can all use Last.fm as they have been, free of charge.

With that said, it's a bummer for sure. I got the free 3-month subscription too, but I don't use it religiously on my phone -- just here or there. Certainly not enough to justify paying for it. What I'm more interested in is scrobbling what I've listend to so it can match up my collection better for when I listen to Last.fm on my computer.

Yes its true. I just got this email.

Dear ericld,
We want to share with you an important update about our radio service:

From February 15 you will need to be a subscriber to listen to Last.fm Radio stations on devices, including your Last.fm Android app.

No other features are affected by this change.

You may have recently started using this feature, and we are offering you the following so you can continue enjoying Last.fm during this transition;

A free 3 month subscription to Last.fm
This will start automatically on February 15th 2011. As a result you will continue to be able to use Last.fm as you do today until the end of your subscription. If you'd like to see the other benefits of your free subscription, please visit the subscription page.

We appreciate you may have questions about this announcement, so visit our blog to read more about these changes and offer feedback.

We value your support and hope you continue to enjoy using Last.fm.
You can visit your profile at http://www.last.fm/user/ericld

– Team Last.fm
This really sucks. The number one reason I use LastFM is because its free. I like the way they say " no other features will be effected", like , what the hell other reason do I use LastFM. I would rather deal with the occasional commercial than this. I guess the only decent free listening now is Shoutcast, and even they are changing their format for some reason.

Pandora for me 100% and I even payed for Pandora One...yes that's how much I use it.

40 hours a month is not enough for me.
If you use it on your mobile device it doesn't count against your time (at least not on iPhone)

It's funny that they have it setup this way as it's pretty much the opposite for Pandora or what I like to call it... Panjammins lol.

Yeah, I'm not happy about this either, but in the end of the day they're a private company, and have to make money somehow. That said, they've cost themselves a customer here, and I doubt I'm the only one.

Personally, I liked last.fm because it was the best way to find new music. So simple - stick in an artist you like, it'll play other similar artists in the same tagged genres. I've found countless new bands this way. I use it almost daily on my iPod in my docking station while I'm cooking, guess those days are over now
(ok, I could pay the £3, but I can get a whole album for that!)
