ESXi or VM running inside host OS?

Sometime within the next month or so I'm planning on going back to using Untangle on my home server, and a thought crossed my mind.

Would it be better to run Untangle inside a VM on the host OS (Debian) which will in turn be acting as a general purpose home server (file server, ampache, newsreader, etc...) or would it be better to use something like ESXi/Proxmox and run the two in separate VMs?

Keep in mind better also entailing "less headache to manage".

The server is currently running an Athlon II x4 640 and 4GB of ECC RAM, which would be upgraded to 8 if running ESXi.

I would go for the ESXi option, unless any of your other functions require direct hardware access.

Regarding the memory - if you go the ESXi route you will likely need less RAM than if you go the host OS route. ESXi is very clever when it comes to memory management.

And assuming the hardware is ESXi-capable... What kind of storage subsystem is in the system? That would actually be the determining factor for me...

OS is on/would be on a dedicated 7200.12 drive. Storage is on a RAID 5 array of currently 3 1TB 7200.12 drives.

RAID array is on a dedicated hardware controller.

Is your controller supported?

I wouldn't run an OS (even a virtual one) from a RAID5 array. Performance will be poor, especially with so few disks. Using 4 separate drives (with one as a backup holding OS images if necessary) would be faster.

the_beast has some good advice there. You could pick up an inexpensive PERC 5/i controller (read from Ebay if there is not one FS on here) if your current one is not supported.

No, no no you misunderstand. The OS is not on the RAID array, it is on it's own separate drive.

The controller card is a PERC 5/i.

Only compatibility issues I am seeing is the onboard NIC of my board is not supported, however I have 3 dedicated NICs going into the machine.

You have plenty on horsepower then to do what you need to do. IIRC you can run Untangle in a VM but it's go longer actively supported by Untangle. I tried it once and it didn't work for me, but then again I only but 5 minutes of work into it.

No no, YOU misunderstand

The point is that your VMs will be on your RAID-5 array, right? So.... you'll have a bunch of VMs booting off of the RAID-5 array... hence "OS on RAID array".

If you had... oh, 8 drives in RAID-5 on that PERC5/i, it might be good to go... but only three is... kinda slow.
