ESXi or VM running inside host OS? - Page 2

Definitely ESXi if it's supported. If one machine corrupts, it doesn't take your whole network with it.

If you had... oh, 8 drives in RAID-5 on that PERC5/i, it might be good to go... but only three is... kinda slow.
No, once again.

The OS, VMs or otherwise, will not be on the RAID 5. I may very well put it on a RAID 10, or perhaps a RAID 0 and have backup images on a secondary drive - but only storage will be on the storage array.

So all your OSes will be running from a single drive? That's not going to be pretty either...

I'm glad that was cleared up. It could have gotten ugly

PERC5/i is limited to 8 drives, if I remember right... and I'm not certain you can have two RAID virtual disks of differing RAID levels on the same card. I could be wrong on that one, but I thought I remember seeing that as a limitation on the PERCs.

Well, it depends on what he's doing with the VMs... I will say that it's not the best configuration, but it's not necessary "horrible" for a non-production, non-enterprise level configuration. I have 2x WD Black 1TB drives in my ESXi server acting as single-drive datastores. They're not bad for the VMs that are on them... Mostly VM file servers with DFS configured between them

just be careful when enabling the firewall on untangle, make sure you have the rules set up right first. I didnt think and left the default rules on the firewall and when I enabled it I ended up locking myself out the server and ESXi.
