I'm glad that was cleared up. It could have gotten ugly
PERC5/i is limited to 8 drives, if I remember right... and I'm not certain you can have two RAID virtual disks of differing RAID levels on the same card. I could be wrong on that one, but I thought I remember seeing that as a limitation on the PERCs.

Well, it depends on what he's doing with the VMs...
I will say that it's not the best
configuration, but it's not necessary "horrible" for a non-production, non-enterprise level configuration. I have 2x WD Black 1TB drives in my ESXi server acting as single-drive datastores. They're not bad for the VMs that are on them... Mostly VM file servers with DFS configured between them
