CPU Bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hi all,
Long time lurker, first time poster.
I currently have a GTS250 card, and am looking to upgrade.
The question becomes, what can my system handle.

Now I know there is no set guidlines to determine weather your cpu will bottleneck or not, but I would like some opinions.

I have an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad (2.30GHz). Its not overclocked, but it can be (black edition), but I only have a stock fan on it right now...
I have 4GB of DDR2 1066 ram.
GTS 250 1GB card

Trying to figure out if I should just buy another GTS250 for sli, or cough up some dough for a GTX 470 or even a GTX 560.

I just don't want to spend the extra money and have a huge bottleneck from my CPU...

Obviously if I go for the upgrade, I would get DX11 etc...

Opinions? Alternatives?

Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming you mean the CPU. What would you recommend as far as a graphics card upgrade?

You could most likely pick up a 2nd GTS250 (or 9800GTX+) pretty cheap, but you'll be limited with that CPU as it won't overclock very high (1st Gen Phenom). Here's a GTS250 for $60 and one for $80.

I'd grab a better AM3 CPU (since it's still compatible). Here's a Phenom II x3 720 that's only $75, already faster than your 9600. If you are hell-bent on a new gpu, a GTX460 or 560 would be a nice upgrade until the rest of your system can catch up.

Of course, the links I have provided are for used components and also from the OCN marketplace. They are also there simply to help and give examples.

Also, welcome to OCN!!!! Go to the UserCP and put your current rig in your sig.

With my current budget, I could probably pick up another gts 250 and a new CPU.
Would some one recommend the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black or the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black?
CPU-upgrade doesn't show the 970 as an option for my board...
The X6 is ~$40 more from what I see.

Edit: I guess my question is will games even use the extra 2 cores?

If you don't mind spending the extra $40, and your current board supports it, the X6 1090T is a great processor. Also, if you do a lot of rendering or encoding it'll be a nice upgrade. I'm running it myself.

The X4 965 is a nice quad in its own right and will game very well. Totally up to you.

Most games will see no benefit with the X6, but you'll have 2-4 extra cores for OS and other programs you may be running in the background.

EDIT: You'll need to make sure you are running the v1508 BIOS if you get either of those cpus.

Well, might not be upgrading my CPU after all... Tried updating my BIOS to v1508, and poof, no ram detected. Tried defaults, tried clearing cmos, tried reflashing, nadda. Tried flashing back down to where I was before, and booted up with no video. No on-board with card removed either. No beeps, nadda. Had to pop in my mobo cd and let it do its thing, back on the factory bios now, not going to try the bios update again anytime soon :|

Whatever version came on the disc, probably a very early bios version now. It was late once I got it working, I'll check later when I get home and post it here. I'm fairly certain I upgraded the bios sometime last year, so the jump to current wasn't a huge leap, but maybe that was the issue..?

It's possible that it may be your issue, but I will not say that with any certainty. For example, there are only 4 BIOS updates available for my board so it's not much of a jump, and I have skipped them to get the newest and never had problems.

I don't know how many are available for yours. Perhaps it was just a bad flash and would be worth trying again, but that is at your own risk as well. How were you flashing? Was it a bootable USB or flashing tool? Was it in a Windows environment? These are important details.
