With crossfire I would think that buying a single higher-end card would be better than getting two lower-end cards due to heat, scaling, compatibility, drivers, power demands, and price in the end. If you can afford it, it seems like the powerful single card would be the best all-around performer. I think crossfire is better suited to cards that are the highest in their series like the 580 or the 6970 when there is not a faster single card.

With the 6XXX series the scaling in crossfire is almost 100%, even in real life games, a huge step up from the 60% with the older cards.
