[ScientificAmerica] Portable Personal 3G Base Stations

Picochip, a U.K.-based maker of chips used to power portable base stations made by Ubiquisys, ip.access and Alcatel-Lucent, recently introduced the smallest processor in its lineup, capable of fitting in a 12-millimeter-square package. The small size of this picoXcell processor, set to begin shipping to femtocell makers by the end of the year, could lead to cell signal boosters that plug into a laptop USB port and support as many as eight smart phones wherever the laptop goes. Of course, these USB-pluggable devices could also be inserted into desktop computers, cable modems and set-top boxes—any network-connected device with a USB port—to improve a home's cell phone voice and data coverage.

No more bad cell phone reception!

I could see cell phone companies loving this. They sell you a device that strenpthens their network. Im just afraid this could be used to avoid upgrading their networks, instead relying on you to buy your own "hotspot."

The real question is how does this work with regards to data / call minutes?

If I'm using my own bandwidth at home for a 3G hotspot they sure as hell not be trying to count that towards my data plan.

Why not just use Wifi...

If this is simply a signal booster and still uses the Cell networks, why do the devices require a network connection...

So you need an active Internet connection in order to strengthen your 3G connection? Seems a bit redundant if you ask me. Especially now that almost every new phone has WiFi built-in.
