XFX 5770 Non-Ref Locked Voltage

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I bought an XFX HD5770 1GB off of Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150462&cm_re=5770_xfx-_-14-150-462-_-Product) and of course it is a non-reference version with no voltage control out of the box.

The card's voltage controller is the APW7088, which the creator of RBE, BAGZZlash, said cannot be programmed as of now since he cannot find the datasheet with the programming info in it. There is a "public" datasheet out on the internet, but it does not contain the information needed to program the chip.

The things I have tried so far are:

1. MSI Afterburner enabling voltage control in settings and the .cfg tweak: The voltage slider is still greyed out.

2. ASUS SmartDoctor installs fine but when I run it, it says "cannot find video card information"

3. I flashed to the Asus unlocked BIOS, but the PC won't post. The card gets bricked.

4. I flashed to other XFX BIOSes with voltage capabilities, but the PC won't post. The card gets bricked.

5. Sent an email to the manufacturer of the APW7088 chips asking for programming info. I am still waiting for a reply.

My default voltage right now is 1.125V and I can achieve 970/1305 with max temps in furmark around 57C core and 66C mem ( 50% fan with other fans feeding the card fresh air). 2D clocks are modified to 275/1305 @0.95V (Dual monitor setup). The "GPU Registers" in RBE is greyed out. I find the 0.95V too high and I would like to bring it down a bit.

I would like to know if anyone with this type of voltage controller (APW7088) had any luck unlocking/changing the voltage on the card and would like to know your opinions about this.

Thank you,
ULTRA

I guess that it doesn't have voltage control.

Have you tried Sapphire Trixx? A member on here overclocked a non reference XFX 5850 to 1000MHz on the core with Trixx.

you wont be able to control voltage with that one. that particular card doen't oc well usually. your probably as high as you can go at this point and im suprized you got it there.

Trixx will allow you to overvolt on a non-reference board.

I have a non-ref XFX 5870, no method (apart from hardmodding) seemed to allow me to change the voltage,

Sapphire TriXX works like a charm though.

If those frecuencies are stable 24/7 then your card rocks , i have an AMD 5770 Non-reference with native Voltage control the thing that sucks for me i that i got a really "lazy" chip frown.gif i can´t achieve anything beyond 950/1350 even at 1.35V (Max voltage allowed by MSI Afterburner) I recommend that you keep the card at that frecuencies if the gpu is stable remember that some cards like mine have more voltage phases so the voltage maintains more stable if you flash the bios and start playing with the voltages since is not supported by xfx you can damage really bad the card , your warranty would be lost also.

I forgot to mention that I tried Sapphire Trixx and it did not work. I even tried the latest beta version of MSI Afterburner and it did not work neither.

I am in Electrical Engineering, and from a hardware point of view, any voltage controller should be able to be programmed unless this APW7088 acts like ROM (Read Only Memory) where you can only write to it once. The problem is that the manufacturer does not provide any programming information. I am still looking into this, and if we find how to program it, then RBE will be able to access its voltage and alter them.

As for my clocks, I too was surprised that I can hit 970/1300 at only 1.125V. I can even hit 980 but then my score in Furmark drops [WEIRD], so I went back to 970. It has been very stable and max temps in furmark are 57(core)/66(mem and shader).

Thanks for your inputs guys. Keep 'em coming.
