Lens Recommendation?

Thread Starter
Currently I have the following lenses in my signature.
Often times when shooting, I find myself switching between the 18-55mm to the 55-200mm and vice versa. I decided to sell both lenses and purchase a 18-200mm so I don't need to change it as often.
My first question is, is it worth the purchase?
Second, should I get a sigma or a nikon?

This is the one I'm currently looking into.
Thanks in advance

As far as I can remember, they both aren't very good. It's hard to get good optical quality going from one extreme to the other.

Sigma's are fine lenses. I've been using them for over 10 years now and know many who are using them for even longer. True they might not be the absolute best, but for most people (and most printing) they are fine. And by most I mean even most professional shots, not just hobbyist.

Now, having said that, I personally do not tend to encourage "all-in-one" zooms (sometimes called "vacation lenses"). Any brand (OEM or Third Party) just don't compare optically to shorter zoom, higher ranked lenses.

In the one in questions, your largest apt at the far end is f/6.3. The OS will help, but be ready to stop it down to f/8 for results.

Hope this helps.

As an idea, take any lens and search for it on flikr and you'll see results people have taken with that lens. Might help in choosing.

Sigma's low ends aren't very good, their medium and high end are great though.

I echo the sentiment. I definitely do not like superzooms either. In my experience, bad quality on both the wide and telephoto ends.

Personally, I'd keep the two lenses you have now. Switching back and forth may seem like a hassle, but it's better than lowering your keeper rate, in my opinion.

Something to think about when buying lenses is what you like to shoot.
For example, I do a lot of macro work (about 60-70% of my shots), so obviously those lenses are important. But if you're not going to do much, then it doesn't matter how sharp or nice those lenses are.

What do you want to shoot?

Also, I might be out of line, but it sounds like you're wanting to consolidate down two a single lens. Is there a reason then you wanted the DSLR?

Thanks for the reply everyone. I guess I'll just keep my 18-55 and 55-200 for now.
