SHould I return this CPU (big scratch where cpu meets heatsink)

Thread Starter
I just got my CPU and it has a pretty deep groove on the smooth surface of the cpu where it would meet the thermal paste/heatsink.
Here is a link to a close up of the CPU (the groove is right above the AMD text although I doubt you will have trouble seeing it)

http://s254.photobucket.com/albums/h...=amdcpu2-7.jpg

So what should I do here? Should I hope the thermal paste fills the space well enough to not worry about (I am not doing any extra lapping, I am OK with the machine scratches from mass producing - but this is a deep scratch..)
Or should I not even accept this and return it (thus waiting another 2 weeks at least...)

Pretty annoying. I will not say what site sold this to me, unless they will not work with me at which point I will have reason to say who it was... (my frustration seems to be coming through...)

Thanks!

oh and correct me if I am wrong here, but does it kind of look like thermal paste has already been applied and removed to this cpu to anyone else?

edit - can someone tell me the technical term for this portion of the cpu? It is difficult to talk with the company about this issue without knowing the name

well not telling us where you bought it isn't helping us any? Did you buy this retail? If this was suppose to be new, then I would have them replace it, unless it is a golden chip. Otherwise if it is used then they most likely won't take it back.

That's really not big.Really a minor surface scratch. If you are benching you might want to do a bit of lapping-but it really isn't going to affect much.

Did you buy it as a new CPU? If so, I'd return it. The scratch isn't enough to raise the temps more than maybe a degree or 2 at the most, but if you bought it as new, you didn't get what you paid for. If they told you about the scratch before purchasing, than you should just keep it.

The thermal paste will do the job and fill in the void. Tell the name of the place you bought it from. New or used as that would help.
Highly doubtful this is a new chip guys as something like this would never make it out of the factory.

/OT

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it. It doesn't look near as bad as described.

This was a brand new CPU - I was a surprised as anyone to see this. It came from newegg...
I would of course immediately return it other than the fact I will have to wait for them to receive it, go through the return process and get a replacement

edit - yes I do plan to overclock the hell out of this thing btw - I would not have payed for a black edition otherwise

Test it, ensure it works.
Once you have proven that it functions normally then just lap it.

Newegg has awesome return processes. Test it, if it's not golden, return it. /thread
