Low spec linux - Page 3

The new kid on the block, Bodhi Linux is my current favourite light-weight distro at the moment.

Minimum System Requirements:

300mhz i386 Processor
128megs of RAM
1.5g HD space

Being only 4 months old and having the enlightenment desktop environment, I thought it would be quite buggy, but it surprised me at how stable it is.

Base on Ubuntu, it will be interesting when they release the Arch, Slackware & Fedora versions.

looks pretty nice and light weight... more of a throw it on a netbook distro though... i think elightenment would drive me crazy on my main desktop

I need a lightweight desktop sort of environment, that works with, of course what I listed.

you can run pretty much anything on what you listed

1.7 duel core is not weak at all... the dual core helps a lot, but you can run a bloated distro like ubuntu with compiz making everything sparkly and explody on a 2ghz single core no problem... and then even make doom3 run on top of that without frame hits lol

nvidia graphics will help you out even if its a very old generation you can install the closed source drivers from nvidia if you really need a tiny performance boost

1g of ram is plenty for linux, but then again it does depend on what you want to run... if you want to run 50 programs at once, you are gonna dive into swap no matter what distro you run

and an 80gb hard drive is plenty you might not want to do a dvd sized install of a distro... but even with the much larger distros you wont take more than 10, saving 2g for swap, and then over 60 for working room... most distros ive played with tend to install in under 5g easy

when people say they want a low spec linux machine... usually its something like 256mb of ram, 1ghz single core or lower, intel graphics from the stone age, and a 10gb hard drive lol

the only thing im really unsure on is the linux install through windows :/ ive never done that... id think its just asking for trouble... if you dont want to burn cd's, a good alternative is looking up the stuff on installing from a flash drive
Kinda meh now...
