I second the 1TB F3's or the FAEX Caviar Black. The Caviar Black is faster than the F3, but the F3 is still a very fast drive, especially for the price.
Sorry its predictive text on my phone. Did mean to say how fast are they at reading

they are in another league
the acces times are way faster than a mechanical driver ones are ever going to be. next to that the random read/write speeds of an ssd are also way faster. you might be able to match the sequential read/writes of an ssd with some drives in raid, but you wont match the other speeds.

Caviar Blue's are good, but average compared to the F3's.
Read speeds on the Blue's are nearly twice as slow as the F3 and comparable to 5400RPM drives.

F3 is ten quid cheaper, both have 3yr warranty. F3 is faster.

And waddya mean you've not got the board for it? If you meant you didn't have a SATA3 Mobo for the Caviar Blue, don't bother, it won't even saturate SATA2, SATA3 will only truly matter for SSD's or really fast burst rates AFAIK.

If you've got no motherboard at all, then my bad.

I went with the caviar black, they have a 5 year warranty which is excellent in its class and they're great mechanical drives.

Good choice. I got here a little late but I was also going to toss in Seagate 7200.12. I've had four of them last a solid 15 months so far.

On a sidenote, just because one person has a drive or two fail isn't reason enough to avoid said drive. Be sure to check customer reviews from at least 4 or 5 reputable sites before making your decision. It's often the least satisfied that are the most vocal.
