At what temp does the Phenom II throttle/shutdown?

Thread Starter
It is not something I want to ever find out by personal experience, but I was just curious as I've always heard that CPU's throttle themselves when they become too hot, yet I can't find anywhere saying what that temp is. I know 63C is the max "safe" temp for the Phenom II's but I also know that isn't the throttling temp as my CPU has been up to 65C a couple of times with failed OC's.

I have heard/noticed that ~55 or ~56 is usually when Phenoms being unstable in OCs.. Purely temperature wise.

Or are you looking for a temp above the max "safe" temp?

They throttle/shut down at around 70c.

Most time's it'll just take the multi back and drop the voltage, if it continues to happen it'll shut down though.

Max "safe" temp we usually keep at 62c, but for Overclocking, they're more stable with a max of 55c.

Thanks, that's a lot lower than I expected, was thinking 90c or something. Still don't understand how GPU's handle 100+c while CPU's struggle over 65c. +rep

My old 1055t went past the 83°C with IBT, and it did not shutdown nor throttle.
That surprised me as I thought it would shutdown or something before reaching that temp, but it didn't. The Asus PC Probe alarm was like crazy! lol
And my friend's 1055t throttled at around 56°c, but it fixed when he changed the motherboard, so it's kinda strange... not very reasonable

my understanding is the intel chips throttle at high temps but the amd's do not. max "safe" is 62c. They start to lose stability at 55c when overclocked but i think at stock it would be ok. had mine up to 70c once when i forgot to plug in my pump after rebuilding my loop. I immediately shut it down and no damage was done. I would recommend caution with high temps on amd cpus. as I said, i'm pretty sure they don't throttle.

Once when I had a bad seat on my H50, my Phenom II went to about 75c in Windows and it didn't throttle....

That isn't true, AMD chips as far as I know never throttle no matter the temp, and the shutdown temp is determined by the motherboard shutoff feature not an an actual chip function. Most motherboards have it set for 90c. That being said the chip will likely become unstable at temps higher than 62c, however it will not start degrading till much higher. If there is throttling it is a motherboard feature and not a built in feature on the chip.(also note this is my experience with a phenom I which never throttled however I am almost 100% sure they did not add a throttle feature to the phenom II's)

Well it's weird that the AMD CPU's don't throttle then. At least from our knowledge. Tempted to just email their support and ask how it is controlled.
