Help with a strange network problem!

Thread Starter
Hey y'all @ OCN.

Back again with another network problem with a lady friend of mine.

Anyhow, onto the problem
Before, we had two laptops connected to her modem wirelessly. It is a Billion something or rather, but can't quite remember the model number. We know for sure it isn't the modem as one laptop could connect whilst the other couldn't. We resolved this issue by letting the firewall allow the network driver through. This solved it for a week or two.

however, this problem has come up again, and I'm really at a loss. Could it really be McAfee that's stopping the network driver from doing anything? Or could it just be that the modem's bugging out?

Anyway, help would be greatly appreciated.

Disable McAfee and find out. Wouldn't be the first time an AV blocks something that you don't want it to. If it is that, hopefully you can white list it.

That's the thing. That's what we did before and we ended up whitelisting the driver, but now it's acting up again and we have no idea why. We've double checked the whitelist and it's still there :S

Try either temporarily uninstalling McAfee or booting into safe mode and then trying to use the internet. I'm not a fan of McAfee and would recommend at least trying Avast, but, everyone has their preferences. Lol

personally and professionally i think McAfee sucks. I would choose Kaspersky over McAfee any day of the week.

Can you see the network and just can't connect to it? Does it say you get disconnected from the network when and if it drops? Also can you connect to any other wireless networks?

What's the status of this? How is it going? Getting anywhere?

To troubleshoot do the following
-Try to confirm that you are connected (look at the wireless networks)
-Run ipconfig to see that it is getting an address. If the wireless adapter is getting an address, continue
-Try to ping the router's IP address (most likely the same as the DHCP server or DNS server from ipconfig).

Tell us what you get there.
