i'm a longtime diablo fan. i played both 1 and 2 religiously. the third installment of the franchise i have pre-ordered however i'm still on the fence about whether or not i'm going to pick it up.
i check the forums at www.diablo3.com
daily about new updates/implementations of the game and i'm left a little disheartened. no i do not have a beta key but reading the responses of the players that do have it i can formulate an opinion.
1. diablo has introduced a colour palette into their world.
this has never been done before so i'm a big fan of a change. i enjoy the lush environments that a palette change can create however i'm not a fan of losing the horror feeling. diablo 3 is a horror/adventure game. there are moments and times in previous diablo games where you were in a catacomb or some kind of cave or something along those lines. the light around the character and general lighting of the environments were usually toned down leaving many areas of the screen dark. this makes sense. dimly lit places shouldn't have lots of light and lush environments. it also added to obscure approaching enemies so that you never know exactly which mob you'll run into. i believe blizzard has lost this sense of darkness with respect to the new game.
2. leveling system seems weird to me
it's right up there with the clunky leveling system of elder scrolls 4: oblivion. it's weird. not intuitive. you can respec your characters at any time which is a bit of a curse and a blessing in the same token. i dunno...
they came up with some great ideas throughout the course of development. i'm disappointed that the majority of members have left the team/walked out because of decisions to not implement certain features. reading the forums and updates on the D3 website now tons of features have been removed, certain systems like the rune system require massive overhaul, it seems like even now after 10 years with of production time (i know they didn't spend a full 10 years producing it) it's still a clusterf*** of a situation over there.
4.lack of input and feedback from the community
blizzard seems to be unveiling this game for all these people to play...but don't seem to take into account the requests of the people who are lining up to pay for and play the game. that seems like a reversed logic to me.
5. the characters are still polygons
technology has progressed so far over the last 10 years. D1 just wowed me visually, D2 was cutting edge for it's time, D3 looks SLIGHTLY modified from D2. that's pretty whack. why not up the specs of the game and make it the visual appetite it should be.
having said all that i'll probably still purchase D3. i've been loyal this far...blizzard deserves me to at least give them a chance...even tho this game seems to be a struggle just getting out of the design room let alone off the ground...
