For a multi card setup, I'd go with the 6970's. For single cards, the 570. The 6970's scale a little better, run a little quieter/cooler, and use a little less power. The difference isn't exactly extreme though, so you'd still be fine with the 570's if you went that route.

The framerates are too close to matter, so I'd say your deciding factors are:

1. Drivers- advantage 570s. SLi drivers let users create/edit their own profiles, and games usually launch with profiles. ATi users can only force one version of AFR, and wait for profiles from ATi last I heard.

2. Features- advantage 570s. PhysX is nice, 3d Vision is awesome, and CUDA is the standard for GPGPU. ATi's 3d solution is a joke, 3rd party drivers and software, limited to tvs in N America, and limited to 24fps at 1080P. ATi has been promising GPU accelerated physics for about 5 years now, has never delivered. I also give the advantage on multimonitor to NVIDIA, 3d Surround >>>>>>>>6+ panel Eyefinity. The 6+ panel solutions bisect your view with bezels too much, it feels like your looking around a grid.

3. VRAM- advantage 6970s. If you're going to use 1080P Surround there are situations where the 1.28GB 570s will run out of VRAM with AA on.

4. Price- advantage 570s. At newegg the 570s are about $25 less.

Yeah I would get a 2 6970's for scaling. But they definitely don't run quieter or cooler than a 570. I had both cards for a week and anything over 50% fan speed on the 6970 is incredibly annoying.

If you look at my sig, you'll see I'm loosely associated with NVIDIA. It's probably safe to say I'm a fan of NVIDIA products.

However, that doesn't make what I said untrue.

What in my assessment do you think is not true?

You've got to be joking. Have you watched any reviews/ played with any of the 6000 series reference designs?

The 6870 is easily a few times louder than my GTX 570 when comparing same fan speed.

Thats a nice opinion you have there.
Care to follow it up with actual data?

Rollo's comments are actually quite accurate...maybe the truth bothered you some?
I had a CrossfireX setup for nearly a year.
Overall it was great.

The only reasons I would hesitate to do it again would be the issues I had with drivers in some games, no PhsyX or CUDA support, and inferior tessellation.

570's are right there with the 6970's.
Its when you get into mutli display setups that the Radeons show thier potential.
