Water Cooling is NOT Worth it.

Thread Starter
Hello OCN, I've been a watercooler for a couple of months and I got to say that it is definitely not worth the time and money to do. Air coolers take 5 minutes to set up and are just as silent, if not more silent than water cooling.

People appear to be getting into water cooling for a few reasons

1. High overclocks
2. Looks
3. E-peen
4. Silence

High overclocking... Hm, well 4Ghz is easy to achieve with air cooling. H50s with good fans can do that easily as well as D14s and Silver arrows.

But then you have to ask yourself "Do I really need 4ghz?". If you are a gamer with a 60hz monitor, then running games with a little push to 3.7 will be more than enough with a good GPU. I personally barely noticed a difference in games such as BFBC2/Dirt 2/BO simply because my system can already run those games at 1080p on everything set to high except AA with ease.

Looks. hm... Bunch of tubing appears to be the cool thing now? Sleeve your cables in water cooling tubing then if you'd want the look. There are many ways to get the "look" without spending a lot if you be creative

E-peen... Honestly, I doubt people will care if you spent 3x the amount they did for similar performance

Silence... If you're air cooling right now and are thinking to do water for silence, then invest in quieter fans and sound dampening foam

I'm glad that I'm going back to air. My rig will be lighter and easier to maintain.

For GPUs like the 480 or something, then you should look at buying this

you forgot a reason, like not wanting a 4LB metal block of fins stressing our motherboards to the breaking point

if you set up WC right, its near maintenance free, just need a couple of dust filters on your rad fans and done, you clean them every few weeks, like most do anyways, i personally went WC cause its quiet, my pc is about 4 feet from my bed

I like watercooling simply because you have more control of where the heat goes. Then you can have other stuff blowing wherever works inside your case, without messing up the CPU airflow.

I was big into a year ago, then I found there really is no need for it and was a huge waste of cash. When a Air cooler does just as dandy. I literally ripped my custom loop apart and threw it all in a box. Biggest waste of cash I had for a PC. Sure kept my temps cool, looked GREAT with the tubes and lights. But I only saw it... and i could care less.

when H50 and H60 and H70 do just as dandy, i see a full custom loop useless now a days.

What an ignorant thread. Youre stating that noone should watercool because no matter who you are it would not be worth it, which simply is not true. Just becuase YOU dont feel the need for cooler or higher overclocked parts doesnt make water cooling obsolete to everyone else aswell. Some people like to run their computer very cool, and some people only build PCs to benchmark, and therefor need all the cooling they can get. What in the world made you want to make this thread and bash everyone whos watercooling ?

You also have to have patience. Note the difference between 1st timers rigs and those that have been doing it for awhile (well, mostly). It's something that you get better at with time (design, layout, components, etc).

Note the difference between my first and second builds:

3399635073_7a50cfac45.jpg

5076562507_97236b44ec.jpg

The second one is cleaner and more appealing. Why? Because I took the time and patience to learn from my mistakes and correct them. Water also requires maintanance that air cooling does not. If people want to spend their money to squeeze out a few HUNDRED more MHz then that's their choice. If you like air, that's yours.

Look at the chart for watts consumed (and thus heat generated) by the i7-920/930 when you move from 3.6GHz to 4.0GHz and beyond, it doubles (this chart has been published here). I like my equipment and my equipment does not like heat. Even if I still am within the design opertaional parameters at 4.0 (which will not happen if ambients go above 80F) I do not want to subject my equipment to this heat, I want it gone. So I water cool my cpus and at times my gpu's. I could just run a fairly large room AC unit (along with keeping the house AC cranked up) but I chose to place my 3 folding i7's out where I cannot hear them (out in my AZ room) and deal with the heat through water cooling. I don't have a complaint if you do not wish to run your equipment at high clocks and don't mind listening to all the noise but water cooling solves the issues for me that come up when I am using my hardware too an extreme level.
