Good morning, Folders.

Forgive me if this post is inappropriate, but the only folding experience I have is in laundry and my empty wallet.

I'd like to contribute, so could anyone here recommend a good place to learn more about it, and with which Overclock.net Team I should seek membership in?

Questions (if you don't mind my asking):

  • Do you think my Cooler Master V8 is sufficient for cooling when Folding?
  • Have you noticed any appreciable increases in your electricity usage?
  • Given my system, how many "points per day" should we realize?
  • How critical is system stability when Folding?
  • Should I go for broke and slap a decent water loop on my rig?
  • If a train leaves Chicago traveling 45 Km/h @ 2:00 AM...
  • Am I asking way too many ridiculous questions?

Thanks!

-yes im at 4.0ghz 1.4v on my V8 100% around 52 degrees
-nothing drastic
-im on a 1090T and getting ~12000ppd dont know the average for an i7
-doesn't effect system stability as long as the cpu stays cool (runs @ 100% usage)
- its not necessary but you will be able to OC higher
-i suck at math
-nothing is too ridiculous for OCN

GL mate and get folding

- When OCing an i7, the voltage required for the OC highly effects the end temperature. I have not used that cooler in particular, nor have I seen how your chip OCs. I would say, go for it, and if temperatures begin to exceed 80'C while folding, go back a step in your OC.

- This is completely dependent on your electric company. I'm very luck and a kWh for me costs about .06c, and therefore, I do not notice a huge increase in my electric bill. Others have tiered plans that can go in excess of $100 a month, to much more. Therefore, you can either try it for a month and see what happens, or read your electric bill and company's policies on electric usage.

- An i7 at 4.0ghz running on 7 cores pulls about 28-29k PPD. This requires minimal use of intensive activities (mainly gaming). 2 260's will pull about 8k each, so that is another 16k a day. You'd be looking at around 44,000 PPD for your system.

- The main reason I responded is because the above poster was quite inaccurate with this response. Computer stability is IMPERATIVE. Folding will push your computer further than any other stability test, and an OC that was deemed stable months ago may not actually hold up when folding. I struggled for 2 weeks attempting to get a 4.2ghz OC that was stable for folding, but I couldn't do so. I've now deemed this 4.0ghz OC stable, as it was now folded for 2 weeks straight without incident. An unstable OC will mean that your computer WILL blue screen, or sometimes straight up crash, while folding. It may not happen immediately, but if you are testing a new OC, expect it to happen at least once.

  • given my system, how many "points per day" should we realize?not sure on this one.
  • how critical is system stability when folding?very, if it's unstable, you'd probably lose the work unit and have to start over.
  • should i go for broke and slap a decent water loop on my rig? not needed, but if you want to.

I apparently have Folding@Home incorrectly configured:

Why does it read "Core is not running now"?

Also, as shown in the desktop snapshot above, it seems as though only my second GPU is being utilized. Is there some nVidia SLI profile I need to install, similar to the one required to get Civilization V to play nice w/ both video cards?

Please help me figure this out.

Finally, when you guys talk about CPU temps, are you referring to the overall value or the core temps? My cores are runnin' mighty warm, right now, so I may either want to back off my VCore, slow down my host frequency, or finally "get wet" and splash some liquid around in this toasty PC.

Thanks for any advice; it sure would be appreciated.
