3-400 dollar home audio setup

Thread Starter
I am moving into a new house and would like to purchase a decent audio setup to complement my 47 inch HDTV.

I love gaming and movies but also watch sports. I also like to listen to music and am a wannabe audiophile. I own a pair of decent headphones (denon 1100's and AD700's).

Basically my thinking is this:

I was going to purchase an Onkyo Receiver (TX-SR308 5.1 channel) for $200, a pair of nice speakers and a subwoofer for 2.1 audio.

here is my question:

is it worth investing in the receiver if I am only going to go with 2 speakers and a sub instead of surround sound?

is it worth adding surround sound?

is it worth adding a 3rd speaker for 3.1 to have a center channel?

should i just buy an all inclusive home theater system?

help!!!!

Thanks,

Artev

I personally hate center channel, and like a good 4 or 4.1 setup over 5.1 I am no audiophile though. Center channel speakers are usually underpowered and seem to handle 90% of a movies audio. So having a nice set of LR speakers is wasted. It is your personal preference however you can always go to a AV shop and try out different arrangements.

Quality of the receiver will have a big impact on the speakers it can push but I also am using a cheap onkyo (R340) receiver to drive my Polk monitor 40s. The Monitors will eventually be moved to rear surround duty when I have the money with a nice set of towers up front. No sub needed in my space.

AVSforum has a TON of info once you learn their language and can make suggestions for inexpensive combos that sound great as well as how to match mid-high end products together properly. Receivers and speakers have characteristics that do not necessarily mesh well together.

I use my 5.1 as a 4.1... I would recommend not a 3.1... I basically bought the center channel for looks... lol as I don't use it. When I do use it I find it underpowered as well... and voices are not as clear the 4.1 setup... Unless... u buy a really good center channel... but I'm talking thousands in that case... :/ but I could see it being personal preference as well...

Go used. My current setup was about your price range and I have Cambridge Soundworks Tower II mains, Netwon MC400 center, Newton M80 for surrounds, and a BaseCube 10 sub. Also a Harmon/kardon AVR125 amp.

I totally disagree. I LOVE my 3 monitor 50's for my front stage (F, L, R) Wall mount your tv and get 3 identical speakers then say it isnt better.
AVS rocks.

My center was $100 and is just as clear as my $100 L or R

When you look at speakers manufactures make their centers match specific speakers, you cant mix and match or will have unwanted effects.
